Well Subway sandwiches are still accepted as normal by the people unconvinced by the claim that they actually took the floor mat fibers out of the alleged bread.

Making a stop at 103rd and Halsted or 87th and the Dan Ryan for consistently good HArold's. Most of the newer ones don't match up.

I know one of the owners. He's a black guy from Chicago so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he's learned a thing or two.

Good luck. When it's great it's ethereal. But it's rarely great at most places.

It doesn't come on the fries, especially when you ask? Asking was an afterthought for decades.

Maybe?

Actually I feel a little bad that I haven't been there yet. He's a good dude (the owner, not Kirkwood).

The eyetalian bread is good, and agree 100% with white bread needed for grilled cheese or french toast.

Butternut or Wonder White is absolutely essential for a good PBJ.

I can do PBJ on wheat, but it is better on mass produced, bagged, white bread.

You're an ogre. You just don't spread and then ram the PB on. Gently and with care.

Do you guys spread your jelly on the other piece of bread or put it on the peanut butter side and then close it up? I don't know if it matters but it makes a difference to me.

has to go on top of the peanut butter

if you were to spread it on the bread side it would be absorbed into the bread somewhat and make it soggy

Soppin', man. We get that by the gallon here, and when we don't feel like waiting for Harold's, we just go to Popeye's and douse it with Harold's sauce. The bread is key.

You're a Southsider. Find better sauce.

Nas . . . Nas . . . I just don't even know you anymore.

Actually, I have a really limited palate, so it's not surprise that there is better out there, but Harold's is something I can actually consume.

And I dream
about it.

I used to get a whole loaf of white bread and ball it into as best I could an apple shape and eat it as such. I gained 75 lbs from end of high school to 25.

There's a spot by Northwestern called the Evanston Chicken Shack.

It used to be a Harold's. They still have the same recipe, or so people say. The frat bros love it, some of the sorority girls, too. You'll even spot an NU faculty member there occasionally, cheating on his diet with guilt painted across his face and a hint of fear in his eyes.

But it's not the same as Harold's, at least not like the one in Hyde Park at night, when the drunks come lurching in off 55th street after a night of revelry. That's when the fluorescent light bounces off the bulletproof glass just right and makes the chicken taste a little juicier, a little better.

Assuming you make it out without getting into a fight.

I never had any trouble there, but I once saw a guy get beaten pretty badly outside before the cops came. He got a bunch of chicken knocked out of his hands and sauce was splattering everywhere, along with the blood spouting out of his mouth like a geyser.

A giant ball of white bread.

That's like prison food.

Apple shaped bread is up there but my favorites are still can't steam peas and turkey ham.
