I'm pretty sure the area is perfectly fine with "diversity and inclusion." What the area doesn't need is a fifteen dollar hot dog that isn't even that good.

I wonder how much of the charm of the original hot dog place was getting a $15 hot dog served to you by a 9 year old girl in a shipping container.

Bobby seems like a nice guy, but I'm sure he wasn't charging fifteen bucks in Bronzeville. Maybe think about that if you're gonna reference "diversity and inclusion." And I get that he had higher overhead in Portage Park.

And I see he even reduced his price to $12.75 (still about $15 with tax, and close to $20 with a soft drink). He used to be $14.95.

For comparison I think the most expensive Telegram Sam burger is eleven bucks and you can get the basic model for $9. Not to mention, Sam's food is just better than Bobby's. I'm sorry. It's true.

And I haven't even mentioned the bizarre popcorn options at Hot Dog Box.

Nine year olds in shipping containers you say?

I did raise an eyebrow at the racial overtones he hinted at in an area that either has or is adjacent to a festival of nations and economically diverse. It sure sounded like the reporter goosed him to go in that direction rather than him going there naturally, from reading the story. You put your heart and soul into something and its natural to be looking for reasons for failure outside of yourself.

Ironically, he would probably be a bigger hit in a less diverse community if he was charging $15 for a hot dog. Those Wrigleyville people couldn't get enough of waiting in a long line and paying a big number for Hot Doug.

It sounds like the build out was the real business model problem. He could probably find investors immediately and set up shop in an area that is more receptive to paying high prices for mundane food items.

I'm not a fan of Doug, but one of his core principles was that you should be able to get two regular Chicago dogs for $5.00. I realize that isn't possible now, but Doug always had a cheap option. I got a dog, fries, and a drink from Mustard's the other day and it was a few cents short of a sawbuck.

But the douches who frequented the place were going for the jizz-jammed alligator pate dog, not the Vienna special.

Not spending over $10 on a hot dog makes you racist and you should check your white privilege.

True, but I know several people who work in the neighborhood who would have been more than happy to buy a couple of regular dogs and an order of fries from Bobby at a typical price if he had offered that option.

...especially if you are a member of the LatinX population that makes up close to half of the neighborhood.

My guess is they didn't even have a wall of signed pictures of hockey players. You aren't going to make it as a hot dog place in Chicago without playing to the "If it's good enough for Bob Probert to eat a hot dog here then it's good enough for me" crowd.

I think it's around 4 bucks now and 5 for a double.

That wasn't enough to save Peri's Deli

It also turns out that Bob Probert died before the shipping container hot dog box started.

Are you talking about the place on Franklin? That guy had a lot of rules like the Soup Nazi. I got along with him okay when I had an office down there.

I also frequented the place across the street, UB Dogs. That guy was trying to develop a cult of personality around himself like Hot Doug. I just want my bag of food, guy. Save the scintillating conversation for when good dolphin stops in. I would have given his cute little wife a spin if he had let me.

Haven't been to Roma's in awhile. 8.50 for a beef, 6.50 for a polish. Better use of 15 dollars than the woke hot dog Box .

Jim's Original old maxwell street is one of my favorite dogs. They are still serving it up cheaply with fries included. It has a few people in line 24/7/365 even though it has no inside area for ordering. I drive by on my way home from Indiana at 1-2 in the morning on holidays and there are people ordering.

I was always a Jim's guy until they started serving coated fries, which I hate. So I switched to Express Grill.

There's a new Jim's at Diversey & Elston. It doesn't seem too busy. Not sure it's gonna make it.
