Coming to Chicago. It's been a few years but I recall them being good but not inexpensive.

Legal Sea Foods to open on river at former site of Dick’s Last Resort
By Talia Soglin Chicago Tribune
New England seafood chain Legal Sea Foods will open a Chicago location on the river, the company said in a news release Monday.

The restaurant will replace Dick’s Last Resort at 315 N. Dearborn St. in the Marina City Towers. Construction on the location is just starting, said Kim Lapine, chief marketing officer for Legal Sea Foods’ parent company, PPX Hospitality Brands. The restaurant will likely open this winter, she said.

It will serve seafood staples including clam chowder, oysters, shellfish, lobster and sushi.

The two-story restaurant will have private dining rooms, a full bar and outdoor seating along the Riverwalk. Legal Sea Foods is toying with the idea of an oyster bar on the upper floor, Lapine said.

Legal Sea Foods has 25 locations along the Eastern Seaboard, spread throughout Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Virginia. PPX Hospitality owns Chicago steakhouse Smith & Wollensky, also located in Marina City.

During the pandemic, the seafood company tested out a virtual kitchen in Chicago out of the Smith & Wollensky kitchen. The pickup-and-delivery location was open for close to a year and did “tremendously well,” Lapine said, convincing the company the brand had “sea legs” in the Midwest.

The company is open to the possibility of future expansion into the Chicago suburbs or other Midwestern markets, Lapine said.

“Delivering fresh seafood is a logistical challenge,” she acknowledged. “But we ship fresh seafood to Smith & Wollensky all the time, and our partners here on the East Coast are very adept at making sure that the quality and the freshness standards that folks come to expect are ensured.”

Dick’s, which Legal Sea Foods is set to replace, received a permit to open in Marina City in 2008 over the objections of some Marina City condominium owners. The chain is known for its boisterous atmosphere and irreverent service.

Seems like an unnecessary shot at Dick's in that last concluding sentence.

Sounds like somebody couldn't find a hook-up at Dick's.

I could have sworn Dick's last resort has been open longer than that. Maybe I'm thinking of the location near navy pier. Proof that a place can exist on tourist business alone.

I think legal seafood started out as a boston institution and then started expanding, with predictable results to its culture. Maybe I'm misremembering.

It's a slight upgrade over Red Lobster and three times the cost

I thought the same thing too. I seem to recall going to a place over by Navy Pier in the mid-90s but then I thought I might be mixing it up with Baja Beach Club.

I thought Dicks was already down there near the river in the late 90s when I turned 21 but maybe I am thinking of another place.

Like most things championed by the bombastic, vile and villainous people of Boston, Legal Seafood is underwhelming and overrated. Don't waste your money on their bland, nondescript food.

Dick's Last Resort opened its first Chicago location at North Pier in the late 80s or early 90s. I'm amazed that the chain is still operating given that it is significantly worse than Legal Seafood.

I have boycotted Dick's since they stopped selling AR-15's to teenagers.

I never really thought about it at the time but is Dick's Last Resort a play on the idea that if you can't get some action here, go home, you're done. This was your last chance.

Let me know when Red Lobster starts flying in fresh seafood daily…and I dare you to eat raw oysters from there.

I spent a ton of time in Boston area and haven’t had Legal for maybe 25 years. I don’t recall it being bad at all. It’s not the shore of Maine but what it?

The Hampton Social is worse. I don't remember Legal seafood being great or terrible and I go back and forth on McCormick and Schmicks. I'm looking for a good lobsta roll.

Legal used to be excellent for what it was back in the 80s and 90s when they had a smaller number of locations. They had some of the first seafood sustainability and food safety programs. They were located in primarily upscale shopping centers, they were incredibly busy, and the seafood was B+ level at slightly inflated prices. When I lived in suburban Boston, I'd go about five times a year, usually on a Saturday lunch, and they had a location in DC in Crystal City for a while which I would frequent when there on work.

Where they shined pre-pandemic was their airport locations. Rhode Island style calamari and a cup of chowder was a perfect meal before flying back to Chicago.

The rest of the industry has caught up to them, and now I wouldn't make a special trip.

In Chicago, Boston Fish Market is just as good but not as upscale.

You are correct, they were both there. I got dragged to Dick's back about 1988 for a female friend's work outing after one of those horrible Navy Pier dinner cruises.

I don’t think there’s enough garlic in the world for a 2nd Bob Chinn’s.

Drinking from plastic cups sucks.

I don't see how Bob Chinn's survives with the vastly superior Boston Fish Market across the street.

Anthony Bourdain said he never eats oysters unless he can smell the ocean in the air.

That place pretty much sucked. I think it was Bob's brother or uncle or something.

I believe it is Schmalz's Deli now but COVID might have derailed that.

I might take eating oysters advice from him though. Ever had a bad oyster? I have. Worst night of my life. Oddly, I was at the ocean though so I may want to reconsider.
