What is your go-to? Firecakes? Stans's? Doughnut Vault? Do-Rite? Dunkin?

I don't get the allure of Stan's. Can't place it, but the donuts just don't wow me.

My favorite is Doughnut Vault. Do-Rite is also great and does a solid breakfast sandwich where you can replace the bun with a doughnut, so I'd put them a close second.

The location in the Willis Tower is great. Rarely a line and you can get good tasting food and coffee for pretty cheap considering its downtown. The Starbucks outside the lobby has a huge line and you're paying a whole bunch more because its fashionable to wait 15 minutes for your $6 drink and $5 breakfast sandwich.

Do-Rite is excellent for Chicago. But for a basic glazed donut, Old Fashioned is still the best until the old man who owns the place retires or dies.

But even Old Fashioned would be an average donut in Los Angeles, where the Vietnamese owned bakeries make excellent donuts as a matter of course. Stan's came from the UCLA neighborhood in LA and was a goofy trendy donut even then.

Once you get into the great level, there really isn't anything separating them other than personal preference on a favorite flavor. It is just a donut, after all. I really don't need them to be fancied up with heavy frostings.

I can't remember who has the best, but Stan's sucks. If I want to eat bland donuts, I'll find Hillary.

so good it lasted about a year in Deerfield before closing down.

I never went but my chef friend reviewed it for me and said the donuts were pretty bad, especailly for a place with donut in the name.

They do have a good donut. And they are also nowhere near Chicago. I didn't realize how much of a cult Qwik Trip is until one of my Milwaukee co-workers took wedding pictures there. Personally, I think Wally's off 55 is a better gas station / food mart.

This is correct. The Apple Fritters are incredible. Also: I used to work in that area...it's fine during the day.

If Wisconsin is in the mix then Hillside Bakery near Wautoma. Owned and operated by a Mennonite family.

Donut Den , Joliet. Great thing about is the black people that live around there apparently arent savage enough to make it dangerous to patronize during certain times.

I think that's the place we'd go to when I worked at the Merchandise Mart. There'd be a line around the block at that place on the way into work from the train every morning tho when it first opened .

Or whatever donut place it was if it wasn't Firecakes, I think it must've been tho that's about when we got the pour over coffee spot at the bottom of the brown line stairs too. Eventually figured out the new coffee spot was a back-door/life-hack to get donuts and other baked goods from Firecakes or whatever artisan donut spot a block or so over without having to stand in the donut shop line.

It's Doughnut Vault by the Mart.

Bridgeport Bakery on Archer used to be the best till they got new owners. Added benefit they did a decent Kuglea
