Side note: I was trained never to drink the stuff when I saw that, after a night of boozing with my family, the mason jar they had the stuff in had ate a ring away in the varnish on the bar (now that I type that though, I'm guessing this would happen with other alcohols, but ugh)...

Smith has gone legit! That's what TV can do for you. Technically, it isn't moonshine anymore, but I think what some might refer to as "moonshine" is just whiskey that hasn't been aged in barrels or white lightnin'.

Gonna have to ask my dad and brothers what they were drinking with their's but I don't really remember any mixers.

If I'm drinking something that fucked up, I'm doing so for the purpose of getting fucked up...so I'd rather just do a few shots and get it over with instead of diluting it down to some that is only "mildly terrible tasting"...

They drink undiluted shots of 180 proof on the show, usually with a chaser (sweet tea) if available. Why go to all the trouble of brewing a precise recipe just to dump crap in it and kill the flavor.

I like whiskey undiluted. Sure, Red Breast isn't bad if you dilute it with enough spring water so it turns the color of a urine sample. If it can't be enjoyed double-neat (more whiskey in my whiskey is fine), I'd rather drink something else.
