Yes, and this is serious. Go to Small's Barbecue. It's in a garage on Albany right off Irving. It's too small to eat in, but there is a bar called Lizard's right on the corner where you can take the food and get a drink.

UMI Restaurant tucked into a strip mall next to a cat vet about a block west of California on Irving Park has really good sushi.

The old La Pasadita on the south side of Irving Park was shut-down for health code violations, permanently.

There's a La Pasadita "cantina" directory across the street from the closed one that is still open, has table service and full bar.

Lizard's Liquid Lounge in front of Small's is a lesbian bar, fwiw. You can go to Lizard's after ordering from Small's and Small's will walk your order over when it's ready.

Bread & Wine, about a mile west of there. White tablecloth, cool owners, eclectic. Also, if you've been dying to try any of these, your less than 3 miles from Kuma's, Honey Butter Chicken, and Hot Dougs. Oh, yeah, and Leadbelly.

Probably not.

If your son is with you, you could do worse than Mirabell at Addison and the Kennedy. Every spot Telegram Sam named is good but some are bars and with some you're starting to get kind of far afield.

As long as it's not later in the evening (say after ~8 pm), kids would be fine at Lizard's. It's a roomy corner tavern with a pool table and darts that they don't seem to mind letting the kids have a go at. You won't have much in the way of table service, waters and sodas for the kids at the bar

Dapper's on Addison a few blocks west of California (in the Target shopping complex there) is a cut above Denny's and has alcohol. I've only had salads and soups there. Dapper's has kid menu items and most things include soup/salad/dessert.

Funny thing, is that these are some of the best places in the city where real cooking is going on. Not a chef who designed a menu and some guys copy the dishes and one guy wipes the plate, or frozen shit from Sysco dropped in a fryer.

Wait for my new BIG and LITTLE on Belmont, should be soon

:D Yes, it's getting down there, but the folks who go to Dapper's regulary still haven't all died off.

same guys as the place on Orleans? Tasty fish sandwich and truffle fries. They used to have foie gras fries. I've never tried the plucky Somali cab driver restaurant on that same block.

What about O'Donovans....Irving Park, 1 block west of Damen.

My first time trying a burger with the crushed blue cheese....outstanding.

It's good stuff - it was my aunt's favorite place to go. We used to take her there for her birthday every year.

How have I lived in the neighborhood since 2008 and never heard of this place???

I blame you JORR, you know I live around there yet you never told me about the place? Menu looks really good, gonna check it out soon.

Its REALLy small.

I actually went into it before it was Smalls....its the size of a garage. You would drive by it if someone didnt tell you about it.

Always though it would be a good dive place.

Been looking at a few of those buildings for my office for awhile now

Yeah, it was a shrimp shack for awhile and I think something else was in there before that.
