Anyone (apart from veganfan) given this a shot? Not doing this for ethical reasons but trying to eat and live healthier. For the past week I've had nothing but dal (a fucking amazing Indian lentil and rice dish) but I feel like I need some variation. Any thoughts?

Pretty much. I've had a salad or two for lunch but it's been pretty much lentils and mung beans all day every day for the past week. I'm farting a lot by the way.

You'll find more variety in tons of places, including the south asian stuff you're currently sampling. You can combine dal with bread/naan too, and the bread itself can contain several other ingredients that make it a meal/snack on its own: there's garlic naan, potato naan, and other combinations. Along with dal there's a spinach and potato dish (also eaten with bread or rice), and something called biryani which is basically rice flavored with spices and mixed with chicken or meat, but you can substitute veggies which is also very common. I'd look at menus of south asian joints in your area, especially south indian places if possible, for more ideas. There's of course tons of other stuff in other regions as well. Look at roti's website for more Mediterranean veggie combos.

Finally, check out whole foods' buffet and prepared foods sections during lunch and dinner. you'll find some tasty stuff there for sure.

If you're not doing this for ethical reasons, I'd drop vegan from the vocabulary when you're out at restaurants and/or grocery stores and letting folks know what type of food you're looking for. Without getting into too much detail, and you probably already know this, but veganism is the stricter diet of the two which extends the no-animal consumption philosophy into other food/drink products, including dairy, eggs, etc., thus reducing the amount of stuff you'd be able to consume while remaining faithful to your diet.

My mom cooks up a big batch of lentil soup, refrigerating some and freezing the rest. Gets one of my nieces excited, and she's a picky eater otherwise.

The next time I do a "strict fast" day, I'm gonna mix some protein-type imitation meat with a big can of Bush's vegetarian beans. Once I spice it up, maybe it'll be like the "5-alarm chili" Paul Bryan was always talking about on WGN Radio.

I like vegetarian chilis and different types of stuffed mushrooms. I tend to stay away from the soy and soy substitute stuff, I think it's gross. Eat enough proteins and fats so you feel full and watch the carb intake. Nuts, sunflower seeds, avocados, quinoa help. I like Blue Diamond almond breeze products which are good for smoothies. I think not going full vegan helps. Fish, shell fish, and eggs are all healthy. Raw food sites are good to look at and at least get some ideas from but some of it is labor intensive.

I was vegitarian for about 2 years in my early 20s. Back then was hard to go out eating now seems to be much easier. Plus back then I was not as well versed on Indian and Thai food,would have fared much better.

You can try the following which are tasty vegetarian choices:
1- Thai Food - all curries can be made vegetarian
2 - Indian Food - a large portion of Indian Cuisine is vegetarian
3 - Middle eastern food - Felafel, Stuffed grape leaves, various salads, etc...
4 - Homemade food - Roasted Root vegetables (Sweet potatoes, Butternut squash, mushrooms, onion, etc)

for drinks you can try (if you want to cut out dairy as well):
1 - Almond Milk
2 - Green smoothies (combined vegetables and fruits, etc..)
3 - Water
4 - tea

At least of of the pizzas under the Amy's brand contains no dairy, eggs, or meat. You can find it at Whole Foods and some of the larger Kroger stores. Pretty good if you add some extras before baking, like green peppers and onions.

The most Indian foods are fried claim is dubious. Don't know about Chinese. There's also a difference between straight up butter and ghee.
