Burger King is like Fat America's dissappointing son. Used to be decent. Got mixed up with a bad crowd and has become a leech on society.

There are twice as many Tim Horton's (relative to land) in Canada as their are McDonalds in America

I actually like Burger King burgers compared to McDonalds. But the last time I went to Burger King, which has been awhile since all the ones close to me have shut down, the burgers have seem to been shrunken wayyyy down. It's probably a cost-cutting measure because they have fallen on tough times, but the Cheeseburger I had was almost like a slider patty.

But the chicken fries are back. 8)

You will be happy if they expand from their northern border cities footprint. They supposedly have very tasty donuts.

this has already been discussed in another thread, but every Burger King I've ever been in felt...dirty. Maybe it's the decor. I used to love the food, but back then I could eat anything. I was like the Mr. Fusion Home Energy Reactor.

I have the same feeling. I think BK food is superior to McD. However, all of their outlets feel like a place that is just hanging on, not paying rent just before being evicted.

Looks to be another tax inversion deal, which would cost US taxpayers.

I also heard that the BK SatisFries are being discontinued. Unfortunate...I liked those way better than the regular fries.

I would definitely boycott them if I ate there.

The big news on Monday has been reports that Burger King is in talks to acquire Tim Hortons, Canada's most popular coffee chain.
According to a recent KPMG study, Canada is one of the most business-friendly countries in the world. At least, when you look at the total tax cost for companies operating in some of the world's biggest economies.

KPMG examined the tax costs of doing business in 10 major economies: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Using the U.S. tax rate as a benchmark of 100, the report found that Canada has the lowest total tax costs, with costs coming in 46.4% lower than those in the U.S.

To find the total tax costs, the report weighed corporate income taxes, property taxes, capital taxes, sales taxes, miscellaneous local business taxes, and statutory labor costs in each country.

So, a company's total tax cost is about more than just the effective rate it pays.

And on the basis of simply an effective tax rate, Burger King wouldn't appear to be getting that much of a break in acquiring Tim Hortons. This table from KPMG shows the corporate tax rate in Canada is 26.5%, which compares with 40% for the U.S.

According to Burger King's most recent 10-K, in 2013 the company's effective tax rate was 27.5%, so not much higher than the Canadian corporate tax rate.

But Burger King is run by a 33-year old alumnus of the private equity firm — 3G Capital — which bought out Burger King in 2010 and took it public in 2012, and its management certainly knows that tax costs are about more than just the advertised rate.

This table from KPMG shows how countries stack up in total tax index.

The perfect restaurant would find a way to offer up a value meal like this...

Whopper with cheese
McDonald's fries
Wendy's Frosty

One of the few times I can agree with you.

Wendy McKing would be the name of it.

Well Dick Durbin sure as hell ain't happy about this.
Says they're trying to get HQ into a more tax friendly country!

I wonder if he ever gets competitive quotes from contractors before he has work done...

Wait, I guess he doesn't. Just... "friends" doing "favors".

I'm still not sold on the spread widening potential of this transaction. Granted, they may realize some operational synergies around supply chain, possibly decent SG&A harmonization, but is it a good enough reason to go in? Not sure.

When deals of this magnitude are concocted I'd typically look at the growth angle more than the operational synergy angle. Good material for the business newsies though drooling over a prospect of a Tim Horton donut as an alternative to Dunkin.
