It sucks when you come up with a rock solid concept and then The Korean War starts. Managed to hang in there for another 60 something years.

I've been here, but this place falls more squarely into the dolphin/JORR/possibly Tall Midget vortex.

This is a fucking disaster. Now I have no local go-to for old fashioned Cantonese. For the record, I don't think Tall Midget liked the place. And I'll say that plenty of the dishes were quite common and the place always felt dirty (very common for this style of restaurant), but if all they did was sell the egg rolls, this was one of the greatest restaurants around. Get 'em while you can! I guess I'm gonna have to drive to Wah Sun or Orange Garden now.

This is the egg roll (http://www.lthforum.com/bb/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=10032&start=30):

Damn.

I'd just buy a food truck and sell that fucking thing.

Hunan Spring in Evenston is pretty good. Don't think it's especially Cantonese. Not going to look it up or make Ohio joke.

I just looked up Hunan Spring. I lived a block away from there for ten years and I had never heard of the place. There's been a lot of changes on that stretch of Chicago over the past several years. I assume it's in the strip mall by Walgreen's?

It is. I'm new to the area, but it is well regarded. I thought it had been there a while in some form.

The Pineyard was always THE Chinese restaurant for Evanston people, but it burned down several years ago. I'll have to try Hunan Spring. It's still not too far from me.

I never went to Kow Kow even though it is close and has patronized me. Sorry to see them go for the later.

You should come to Leadbelly. I've been patronizing you for years on here.

My brother brought some home for my family on a night I had to work late. My loving family saved none for me. Everyone was highly complimentary of the product. That is a pretty solid strip mall for food with Harrington's Corned Beef and Leadbelly.

NOOO! This place has been my go-to for Chinese food my whole life. It was a damn good run though for Kow Kow.

I live a block away from this and I've been to neither. Might have to change that this week.

I learned early in my Hibernian hookup that Harrington's is the gold standard for corned beef in this city (in terms of buying a side for cooking at home). I never thought there was a difference but it is true. The shop next to Leadbelly sells sandwiches as well, which are incredibly over priced but excellent. Get the hot irish mustard. It's on my Danny Mac mustard belt list.

I can only speak to Leadbelly's by reputation.

Thinking about it more, that is a great stretch of food with those two and Superdawg.

How does the Polish guy forget Filonek's? And Mom's Old Recipe is one of the better Mexican restaurants you will find.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/dining/ct-phil-stefani-opening-italian-restaurant-kow-kow-space-story.html

Phil Stefani to open Italian restaurant with daughter Gina Stefani in former Kow Kow space

The new, still-unnamed restaurant will have 175 seats in the dining room, dine-in bar and a private dining room.

The chef is also yet to be named, but Stefani said guest chefs from Italy may be possible. He travels there five time a year, staying in Lucca in Tuscany, where he restored his mother’s house.

Why Lincolnwood? “I live in the neighborhood,” he said by phone. “My wife grew up in the neighborhood."

"And I guess I’m just trying to save 45 minutes of driving all the way downtown if I get hungry.”

I heard they were trying to hook up one of the Kow Kow cooks to make the egg rolls for the bar, at least for the first few months. That would be a nice touch.

What a great idea. I like it when people are not so married to their "concept" they can recognize where a nod to the history of the place in the neighborhood is appropriate. 175 seats, that place is going to need to draw locally.
