It's my grandma's 95th birthday on Saturday, and I'm responsible for making most of the food. Thought it'd be fun to make baked beans from scratch to go with the pulled pork. I usually make Boston baked beans with molasses and mustard, but that's not barbecuey enough, and I'm not just going to buy canned beans. Any secret ingredients you'd recommend?

For a 95yr old, irrespective of the dish, I like to drop in a few Worther’s Originals and one of them strawberry candies manufactured during the war with the strawberry colored wrapper.

My grandma once asked me if I wanted strawberry short cake as she was walking to the kitchen. I said no and she brought me back the equivalent of half a sheet cake. Maybe try that but with beans.

1 pound ground beef
1 pound bacon,chopped
1 onion,chopped
1 can pork and beans with juice
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 can lima beans,drained
1 can kidney beans drained
1 can butter beans with juice
1 cup ketchup

Brown the ground beef with the bacon and onion. Drain. Place in crock pot with all of the beans. Gently mix in the ketchup and brown sugar. Cook for 3 hours on high setting or 6 hours on low setting. Stir very occasionally.

my mom has a garden that would rival Tall Midget, one time many many years ago I got her to plant some habaneros . My grandma (RIP) came by one day and picked a bunch of them thinking they were just regular bell peppers. Hilarity ensued.
