Post subject:  Giving Up Coffee

Is there anything harder to do? When I've tried, like one day last week, I failed miserably.

Your mind is in a fog and you're very tired and generally out of sorts.

I could drink coffee all day, but my digestive system at 45 years can't take it anymore because of the acid. So I take acid reducers, which you should not do over an extended period. They only temporarily relieve the problem. Tea doesn't work as a substitute. Monster drinks might, but they are no good for you either.

If I went to a G.I. specialist, the first thing he would say is stop drinking coffee. Easier said than done.

Never touch the stuff.

I prefer other drugs.

This is what I would do:

Figure out out after a week, how much you are drinking.
Example: you drink 10oz a day.

Week 1: Drink 10oz each day
Week 2: Cut it down 1oz
Week 3: same
ect ect

After 10 weeks of cutting it down, you should be good.

I'll give up caffeine for two weeks. You give up water for two weeks. We'll then compare notes. Well, I'll compare notes. You probably won't.

I've tried but failed. It is the only pleasant thing in my day before I get home and start drinking cocktails.

Here's a suggestion I'm sure you will ignore: Brew your own high quality, very strong coffee at your desk. 10-12 oz will give you close to the caffeine buzz, but it is so strong you would want to sip it slowly over the day rather than guzzle it.

I use one of these: https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/ ... oC3OHw_wcB

I'm lucky enough to not have this addiction. Being addicted to nicotine and booze already takes up too much time.

You just have to do it slowly and pay attention to how much you are drinking. Just take your intake down by 20% for two months and then take it down by that same amount after that. You should be able to go from 5 cups a day to 4 cups a day pretty quickly and then when you adjust then go down to 3 cups a day and so on.

Get down to one cup a day and there really isn't a major reason to cut it out completely. I have one coffee drink in the morning and then that is it for the day unless I get iced tea and a restaurant. I used to drink a 2 liter of Diet Coke a day. Now I have a Diet Coke about once a month and don't even really enjoy it unless it is from McDonalds.

Same. I used to drink an insane amount of Diet Coke. Now I don't drink any unless it's fountain pop. I bet at my peak that I was drinking a 12-pack of Diet Coke a day. Fuckin' addictive personality...

It's weird that you lose the taste for it after you quit, though.

I never drank coffee, because I didn't like the taste. I did, however, drink caffeinated green tea. I cut out caffeine a few years ago for the acid reasons, too. I wanted off the PPIs. Green tea has far less caffeine than coffee, but once you get through it, you're good to go. You may need to taper down the caffeine as other have suggested, but I have found that people generally feel better when they're free from caffeine.

My problem was more of a mindset. If I was thirsty then Diet Coke was simply the drink to be less thirsty. I wasn't really drinking it for the caffeine though obviously you get get used to that.

I moved from 60oz of coffee a day to 20 recently. Just the one first thing in the morning and moved on to ice water after that. For me it was just a matter of replacing it with something else.

Try switching to that if you need caffeine without the coffee acid.

Or switch to covfete.

Yeah dude... gross, I know. When I was right out of college, I would work 12 hour days a lot and just loved the fuel, and I was never really into coffee.

To reiterate the Dennis/ scorehead stance, giving up soda 3 months ago was one of the best things I've ever done. Pure garbage .

Never, one of the things about people like me is a addiction to smoking and caffeine. I don't smoke but I drink caffeine from when I get up till I go to sleep. 2 cups ,then iced tea all day ,usually around a gallon.

Dignified idiot, it's called caffiene pills. Take two a day. You'll hate coffee.

Post subject:  Re: Giving Up Coffee

It really is a vicious circle with caffeine addition. You wake up and have your few cups, and then by 10:00 a.m. you come crashing down and need more to stay alert. Same after lunch and around 4:00 p.m. Some people have given sensible advice to cut down. That works for a while, but if you backslide just a little with an afternoon cup, you're back to your old ways, because it makes you feel good. I have started drinking more water as a substitute for pop and have had success. But getting over that hump in the morning after waking is a bitch. Nothing satisfies and perks you up like coffee. It's as much as a physical addition in smelling and holding that warm cup as a psychological one.

I quit eating chocolate cold turkey because of an allergy to coco. You can find substitutes for chocolate in other sweets, but there's none for coffee.

No, dude, it tastes great. It took me a while to get used to it, but it makes the food taste better.

Of course, I don't drink, so my options are limited to water and milk (which I call MLK to be progressive).
