Thomas Jefferson was probably my favorite person who became president, but much of what Jefferson did came before or after his presidency. Not to take away from his presidency, but he was so much more than that.

Otherwise, Teddy Roosevelt and Madison.

Underrated president was James Polk. He may not have been the best, but you can't take away how much he changed the US. He expanded the size of America greatly with the annexation of Texas and the Oregon territory as well.

James Garfield is probably the guy who could have been one of the best had he lived long enough. Everything about his life leading up to his presidency was great, and he seemed like he had the perfect political foresight for great things. Hell, his pick to be the republican party's nominee is amazing in itself.
