I think El Salvador level shitholes are actually only Baltimore and Detroit, and maybe East St Louis types of smaller cities and towns. Parts of the rust belt and Delta and other parts of the South that are just forgotten about shells are also legitimate shitholes but for different reasons. They are more like Australian shotholes that exist or failed simply because of how spread out America is, with the vast majority living in and around population centers like Chicagoland separated by hundreds or thousands of miles. Russia is similar. Those places rely on crumbs and most people who still live there either dont mind or are truly too poor to do anything about it. But there are not many. Maybe a 2-3 million in the US. Those are the truly poor who really do need a handout, if they even want one. Tossing money at the problem is pointless in most cases. They are like parts of Siberia where drinking and beating your wife is all you do with your time. Putin gives them money to keep them drunk. Everyone else made some shitty personal choices somewhere along the line or had some bad luck, or both. Poverty isnt what it used to be 20 years ago. There are people living in 21st century poverty who have plenty of toys and spend plenty of bad money. Most of those people are living in areas where poor choices extend to most every other aspect of life. |
