I dunno if I mentioned this before but please for the love of god if you're one of those goofs that covers your AC condenser (the outside unit) in fall/winter take that cover off before you fire it up tomorrow/Thursday (80's predicted).
Already had a trouble call where a goofy bastard didn't do that and blew out a liquid line today.

Not sure why people fire up the air conditioner when it hits 80. People do it in my building when it gets in the 60s. This must have something to do with the pussification of america. Open a window ya fat bastards...

If you can afford to pay someone to sweat your copper point joint, you are THE man.

This winter has resulted in some annoying problems. First, my sump pump PVC on the outside of the house froze and burst back in December the one day where it dropped from 40 to below 0. This happens to me once every two or three years, so I always have backup pipe to replace it. Problem was, it never got above the 45 degree mark (where the glue works best) again long enough for me to replace the pipe. I finally replaced it on Monday as I had a crappy corrugated pipe hookup that got me through to that point. Problem is, the ground sunk pretty significantly, not only in the area by the pump intake but also in an area that is more to the corner of the backyard where I pump the water to. Now after the pump fires, I still get running water from that sunken area, resulting in the pump running constantly. I'm wondering if my whole house is going to cave in on itself like in Poltergeist.

Every year around this time of year I go to no cooling calls because some mope left the cover on their condenser when they turned their ac on for the first time.
First you really don't need one but if you have one take that cover off before starting it up.

Not to repeat myself too much but it's starting to be time to start thinking about those sump pumps.
Make sure your outside hoses didn't get clogged and think about picking up a spare pump to have on hand.

I like to tell people to change the batteries in their thermostats a minimum of once a year. And hey the superbowl is once a year. What a nifty coincidence.

While you're at it do your smoke alarms.

Hi Darko, long time reader, first time poster in this thread,

What are your recommendations on installing an air conditioning unit other than going the central air route? We have a brand new boiler (worked it out with the purchase of our home) and currently use window units in the summer. We've seen numerous different air conditioning solutions, including something that looks like a giant octopus.

Thanks, I'll hang up and listen.

Mitsubishi makes ductless air conditioning systems.

Duct gets replaced by this:

I am not sure if they are popular in the Midwest but there is an option they use out here that works for some. With a lot of homes very old and so on they use a central unit that goes in the attic or whatever you have. They then run soft ducting down from there. Through ceilings, walls and whatnot.

Not sure if that might work for your layout?

It's called an air handler. It will work if you have enough attic space.

Yep the ductless splits are pretty nice. Kinda pricy and not a lot of companies out there installing them but it's a decent solution. The other option is the spacepac air handler... operates at a much higher static pressure and you end up with what looks like 1.5 inch holes that supply air. They're a bit noisier and typically require a central return somewhere in your ceiling typically on the 2nd floor but I have seen quite a few with a return on two floors. Probably a bit cheaper that route than the mini split but I'd say overall you'll probably get more out of the more ex0ensive ductless.
