One possible solution to end-of-life decisions might mirror what various Constitutional law wonks think will eventually be required to allow abortion to pass Constitutional muster in a world of ever improving medical science moving the point of viability earlier and earlier in pregnancy:  Appoint an attorney or other advocate to represent the foetus/late stage terminal lung cancer patient in their hospital bed. Yeah, last thing we need is more lawyers, but at least it heeds the call out in the final line of President Lincoln's first/original draft--the so-called Nicolay draft--of the Gettysburg Address:

Looks like The Goldfinch will be out in September. Another book I am surprised was never adapted is Fools Die. But who knows what happens when someone buys the rights, can't get the thing made, etc. I though Mickey Rourke would have been the perfect Cully Cross if the movie had been made around the time of the Pope of Greenwich Village. |
