The real reason this happened is fatigue. The Navy has been putting an emphasis on getting the ships out to sea more, but maintenance and training suffer as a result. When guys can't train, they can't qualify to stand certain watches meaning you have a shortage of officers and sailors who can stand watch. It's not unheard of to have an OOD on the midwatch who maybe has gotten 3 hours of sleep in the preceding 48 hours. That's a recipe for disaster. |

She's the designated "special projects" boat so she does some things that fiction writers can't even dream of and we the public won't hear about until decades later. I suggest reading "Blind Man's Bluff." When the Carter was built, they added a 100 foot section to her hull to carry on the type of missions that USS Parche took on in that book. (Parche had a similar 100 foot hull section added midway through her service life) |
