Ogie, I disagree with the Japan analogy. As long as we allow material amounts of immigration it will prevent us from a Japan style demographic nightmare. In addition, our birthrate, while below replacement, is no where near the low levels of Italy, Japan, South Korea, and China. Those countries have a severe problem on their hands.

then you need to give the immigrants more benefits.

how does this change when automation takes more jobs?

I absolutely agree on immigration. In an earlier post I said this trend was driving Europe's desire to bring in migrants. Japan does not have the option of immigration, but we certainly do have it and must encourage. Sadly our government seemingly has other plans.

every technological change destroys jobs, which then in turn results in new jobs as new industries are born. See all of the automation and industrialization with farming a century ago as a prime example of this. Agriculture at one time employed 38% of the labor force, as it did in 1900. now it is 1-2%. As the agriculture jobs were lost to the mechanization of farming, new jobs were created.

this one ain't creating no new jobs, though. not jobs that people can make a living on.

This has been said with every single technological break through and at every single stage of the industrial revolution. It's simply not true. The jobs that will be created are things that we cannot even fathom. Try explaining software development as a profession to someone working a mill in 1950. Try explaining ecommerce to someone in 1975.

The ASCE estimates a $4-trillion deficit in regards to deferred maintenance. It's not terribly heavy reading, particularly considering the topic and the authors.

It's likely within the next 30 years we see more economic change than we have seen since the Industrial Revolution. It may prove to be the correct answer to say "Let the next generation worry about it" given that everything is going to change anyways and we need to see just what that means.

The argument that "this is the same argument" is not automatically a valid argument. Ya got your head in the sand, brother, if you think software or ecommerce or any new industry is going to create jobs through which people can make a living, through which we can actually build a middle class (or its twenty-second century equivalent). No new worthwhile industries have sprung up to replace the ones that left.

Trickle trickle.

AT&T is giving $1,000 bonuses to 200,000 employees after tax bill

AT&T is paying bonuses of $1,000 to more than 200,000 U.S. employees.
AT&T's CEO said it was in response to tax reform.

The company also increased its capital expenditures budget by $1 billion in the U.S.

"Congress, working closely with the President, took a monumental step to bring taxes paid by U.S. businesses in line with the rest of the industrialized world," CEO Randall Stephenson said in a statement. "This tax reform will drive economic growth and create good-paying jobs. In fact, we will increase our U.S. investment and pay a special bonus to our U.S. employees."

And Trump saved the jobs at Carrier. I realize you’re giddy about this but I’m surprised you’re spiking the ball so early in the game. We can revisit this when the cameras aren’t on. At least BRick will be happy with the $15 wage.

I find it nearly impossible to believe that AT&T was just sitting on one and a quarter billion dollars simply because of the tax structure.

 Jobs that weren't going anywhere in the first place. And then jobs which Trump supposedly saved, are going to Mexico anyway. So much winning.

Well there is a little bit of winning...for some.

But the company said in a statement: “More than 1,100 jobs remain at the Indianapolis facility in keeping with our 2016 commitment.”

Except those jobs were never leaving in the first place. The jobs that Trump "saved" are now going to Mexico. $7M of our tax dollars for a photo-op and good PR.

I remember a time when you got bothered by a president wasting money.

I’m clearly not an expert like you are, but I suspect that the repeal of net neutrality was a bigger boon to AT&T than the tax reform.

This is brilliant PR. A one-time payment of $200M to employees as a thank you to US Government for cutting taxes and repealing net neutrality.
