Seriously, what happened?During the whole Brett Kavanaugh Saga, Feinberg was writing for HuffPo and wanted to find a backdoor way to confirm Blasey-Ford's allegations without actual specific proof, so she wrote a piece centered on the "culture" at Kavanaugh's prep school at the time he was there. Thing is, outside of the word of one former student there on the culture, she didn't have much to go on, so she tried to build a bridge from the overdose death of a Kennedy (28 at the time) to the school, and specifically said that two prep school students (Derrick Evans and Douglas Kennedy, the decedent's younger brother) were the ones who sold the dead Kennedy (and members of The Dead Kennedys) the cocaine that caused the OD.
This was obviously defamatory, and Douglas Kennedy had his attorney pressure HuffPo into issuing a correction, which they did, stating that Douglas Kennedy wasn't involved, and only Derrick Evans "helped David [Kennedy] purchase the drugs", citing an affidavit from the New York Times. Thing is, reading the affidavit and the Times reporting on the incident at the time, neither Douglas nor Derrick were ever named as being party to the drug exchange, selling or buying. NYT reporting on the affidavit has David Kennedy asking two bellhops at the hotel to purchase him cocaine, with Derrick Evans merely being present when the exchange was first discussed. Also, not only was Evans only "present" when David Kennedy asked the two bellhops to buy him drugs, not purchasing, selling, nor helping, but the bellhops were identified and arrested in large part due to Evans' cooperation with police, according to the NYT.
Now having defamed someone in their own correction, HuffPo was forced to issue a second correction, which stated that they "mischaracterized" the drug purchase, and removed any reference to Douglas Kennedy and Derrick Evans.
Why the story of an OD of a 28 year old man at a hotel in Florida has anything at all to do with the "the intended purpose of the article: to provide a former student's general characerizations of the party culture" is still a mystery....except it isn't a mystery: Feinberg obviously wanted to put the death of David Kennedy at the feet of the prep school party culture, which would tacitly confirm Blasey-Ford's allegations about another former student at that prep school, and defamed two former students to do it.
