That one moment is really why I dislike her. She is reacting as if she is hearing the words for the first time when in reality they are months old and provided to the reader by her.

One story that I don't think has gotten too much attention is the police shooting of those who are mentally ill or mentally different. I guess it is hard to judge whether someone who is acting erratically is going to be violent....but coming from a family that has been touched by autism and mental illness, this worries me. What might seem dangerous to a cop might not be....the novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time deals with this issue a bit....

I think this is like the 4th time this year I've heard about the police shooting or attempting to shoot a person with a mental illness. What stands out is that in each case a loved one or a caregiver called for assistance.
