It's ok to rough up customers because... 9/11. Yeah, that was brutal.

Couple of things:

1. "Boarding" is not complete just because you got on the plane. In fact, on American you'll hear them say "Boarding is now complete" right before they close the doors.

2. They can reduce capacity of paying customers, even during boarding. It happens more with the 50 seaters for weather, when they need to load extra fuel because they're worried about a diversion.

3. United Express is actually in this case Republic Airlines is the carrier. Different supervisory staff, runs on a shoestring.

4. Voluntarily giving up your seat, you get a voucher. Involuntarily, you have the right to ask for a check or cash on the spot. Delta is now experimenting with Amazon gift cards for voluntarily giving up your seat in certain situations.

5. Most flights have about 4 seats which are not assigned until right before boarding begins. Used to take care of passengers with disabilities, passengers with little kids, and yes, employees.

6. Crew to go staff another flight are "positive space" and treated like ticket holders. In fact they can be "must ride."

All that said, the screw-up is with the Republic's scheduling unit and the gate agent. Dispatch should have realized that they MIGHT need 4 seats on that plane and instructed the gate to not give those seat assignments out. Then the people who didn't have seat assignments would have been bumped and never would have made it onto the plane. Might have been this guy, might not.

And the bigger screw-up was not realizing that they had 5 seats to Indianapolis, which is inexcusable because INDIANAPOLIS IS REPUBLIC'S MAINTENANCE BASE and there are extra evening Chicago-Indy flights there just to ferry planes in to be serviced. That should be a "Duh!" piece of information for every fucking employee. If they had offered volunteers $800, a flight to Indy, and a taxi ride to the Louisville airport or their house, somebody would have taken it even though they would have gotten home at 2am.

And the Chicago police, well they were just pissed that they had to do something, usually that's one of the cushiest jobs there is.

It's the media's fault. They are just trying to get ratings.

I don't believe this was written and posted by a pilots wife. I believe this is a PR move / post to try and sway some favor back to United.

The guys who pulled him off the plane weren't actually police and were told in January to stop wearing jackets that say "Police" on them.

United is really screwed here.

True. So is the City of Chicago.

That was the general rule about jackets/vests like that.

United Passenger Stung By Scorpion On Board Flight

It’s been a bad week for United airlines, but this one stings.

Passenger Richard Bell was traveling on board Flight 1418 from Calgary to Houston when he was stung by a scorpion, CBS News confirmed.

The scorpion fell onto Bell’s head and stung him underneath his fingernail.

“We were on the plane about an hour, having dinner, and then something fell on my head, so I grabbed it. I was hanging onto it,” he said. “It was lucky that it hit my nail more than my skin I think, so maybe my thumbnail saved me a little bit.”

United apologized and offered Bell and his wife a credit for a future flight.

As a precaution, crews also checked the airplane for a possible infestation.

The incident happened on Sunday, the same day passenger Dr. David Dao was forcibly removed from a United flight in Chicago.

Apparently the pilots' union felt left out so they've taken a stab at blaming everyone else except United. Sure this will work out just as well as the CEO and the pilot's wife.

I'm going to FL in December and thought that all this negative pub would have gotten them to lower prices... not yet. I might try to see if I can guilt trip them out of some free miles. "I'm appalled by your behavior!!!!"

By the way things are going you'll probably be seated next to DiCaro and fly straight into a mountain.

well that was quick, case settled today. United took full responsibility for incident, no longer blaming it on the security guards.

Didn't see the amount of the settlement, I assume it will come out at some point.

Issue on a Delta flight. Family was made to leave the flight. This guy was way calmer about this situation than I would have been.

This shit is getting crazy.

In light of what just happened, why would you ever willingly get off the plane in that situation? Refuse to move and worst case scenario you get a few thousand dollars to exit the plane, best case scenario you get dragged down the aisle and cash in for seven figures.

This case is more than an overbooking

From AdAge

http://adage.com/article/media/delta-fl ... re/308922/

Quote:
For more insight into the situation, the Delta policy seems to state that the person in the seat must be the same as the name on the ticket. This man bought a ticket for his eldest son and attempted to use it for his infant, opting to have his eldest take another flight. This would break federal law and the flight attendant is trying to explain, albeit poorly. The airline then sold the ticket of the eldest child that did not show up.

Blame a fucking retarded Federal law for this one. Delta is just complying with a stupid law and probably gets fined if they don't.
