Why do people say this? I hear this MANY times on radio and TV. Most journalists are pretty good with using "A" and "An" in the proper way. This seems to be the one outlier. Some people pronounce it as "istoric" so maybe they figure the 'An" goes in front, but that is wrong.

Does this bother anyone else? What are other grammar pet peeves that bother you?

It's not technically wrong.

As we all (probably) know, the usage of "an" is recommended before words that begin with a vowel ("an apple", or "an electric hatchback"). Although controversial, it can also be used in front of words that begin with an "h".

Old guys like Dr. Ken, JORR and Tall Midget were likely taught that it boils down to which syllable is stressed in the word that follows. If the first syllable is stressed -- like in "habit" -- you're more likely to use "a" instead of "an." However, words that stress the second (or third) syllable -- such as "hisTORic" -- can be preceded by "an."

What do you say, Flapjacks?
Is it "I want a hotcake" or is it "I want an hotcake?"

The other mope can't get that nickname over ... you're not gonna be able to either.

"An historic" is technically correct ... I'd just as soon hear/say "a historic" though.

Just let me ask you something. Is it "February" or "Febuary"? Because I prefer "Febuary", and what is this "ru"?

I'm the mope that coined that nickname, my friend. I can't seem to get "Sultan of Syrup" over, either!

you literally are an idiot.

Open your fucking ears, they LITERALLY say it 95% of the time they refer to someone as being an all-American. Jim Nantz says it like that 100% of the time.

Anyone who doesn't know this isn't listening hard enough.

The syrup one is better. Which is like saying only missing 1/2 an arm is better than missing 2/3 of one.

Agreed!

I don't think you're a mope.

At least relatively speaking ... there has to be at least a dozen worse posters than you. :D

But the 'h' is silent in that ... it's basically 'our' as opposed to 'hower'. Maybe in some cockney accent when you say 'iztoric' instead of 'historic' you'd say 'an' (though more like 'anne' than 'un').

If it sounds awkward, chances are that it's wrong ... you know, like IMU.

"An dozen", obviously.

It's really the other way around. Those players were always called "All-America", it's only in the last 30 years or so that they became "All-American", probably because announcers thought the former sounded weird just like you do.

yeah i don't hear the term "all-america" anymore really.

what i find annoying is that, about 10 years or so...some asswipe at ESPN decided using "RBI's" is wrong. Because it's not "Runs batted inS". Well, dipshit...then it should be RsBI, shouldn't it? Because it's not Run Batted In, unless it's only ONE.

but now everyone on ESPN, and I think everywhere else in the professional sports world, uses just RBI. Like "this hitter has 101 RBI".

fuck. you. that is my name.

that doesn't surprise me, coming from him.

people want to be so clever. just stick with RBI's. there's nothing wrong with it, and it allows you to use the nickname "ribbies" which sounds a lot better than saying "RBI" like you're Tarzan or something. "Me like RBI. Me Tarzan."
