Sitting in the garage watching the rain.

A few neighborhood teenagers start hitting around a tennis ball in the cul-de-sac.

They accidentally hit it up near my house. I don't care at all... just glad they're having fun.

They fight over who has to go get it. The one who drew the short straw sprints into my yard, grabs the ball, looks at me and says "Hi, sir. Sorry for hitting it in your yard. Won't do it again." I started to tell them it's okay and convince them I was cool, but deep down I knew it was a lost cause. I'm just an old, sad man who hates fun.

I'm so depressed, I might start endorsing Bob Cousy.

Gee, I wish I'd thought of that one.

Busch Light tallboy, with the plastic ring around the can, because it was the last beer.

Was talking to a friend of mine at work the other day. He said his neighbor down the street has a firepit going pretty much every night that it isn't raining, and all are invited. Most of the time, it is just the guy. He said that he'll sit there by the firepit at night from 8pm till 1am with some beers. I asked my friend what this guy does if no one comes over, he said it doesn't matter... he just sits there by the fire. No music, no book, no nothing.

I could see doing that maybe for an hour or so when the mood strikes, but I don't get the appeal of doing that on a regular basis. Sox game on the radio, sure; sitting there looking at nothing but a fire with nobody around, a little weird.

So I was at this fest and was wearing my Tacocat t-shirt. I really like the Exploding Kittens game and the author does some awesome stuff in his comics (check it out if you haven't yet). These two kids, had to be between 12-14, are walking by and one says, "Tacocat? Nice shirt burrito." The part of me that just doesn't give a crap laughed, and I responded with a thank you. Then there was the other part that just turned 40 and thought about responding, "hey kid, I'm going to take a picture of you because, you see, I know how facial recognition works. I'll be able to find you because I know your mom has posted pictures of you on Facebook or Instagram. And then, because I know a lot more than you could imagine, I will make sure the rest of your life and your parent's life is ruined, one day at a time. And you'll never find me."

You've got some privilege if you can watch a rainstorm without thinking of DV/VAW.

 Kids don't really have fear these days. This sort of goes along with Reader's "Playing with your guys" thread. There used to be a hierarchy in the neighborhood. We wouldn't dare talk smack to the guys who were two years older and the younger guys weren't gonna buck up with us. Let alone firing on an actual adult. But what can you really do? You look like a total asshole getting into it with a twelve year old. It's sort of like arguing with Baby McNown.

we had the neighbor down the street who collected the balls from all the neighborhood kids. if a ball went in the yard, he would run out and grab it. finally, my dad went over there and had had enough. he got all the balls out of purgatory somehow. he also told us, the moment it goes in his yard to run as fast as possible to get it. screw his poorly maintained yard he thought looked nice.

cul-de-sac's are the height of it. They essentially create a gated community without the gate
