I'll tell ya' - Massachusetts always seems to have some bizarre stuff going on. My wife worked in Mass (Springfield, specifically) in mental health. She was always dealing with people who had committed violent crimes or were sociopaths. Anecdotal, but it definitely seemed that way.

I can see forcing this girl to get mental health evaluation- but manslaughter? What threat is she to society? Is she going to find vulnerable people and talk them into suicide with her golden tongue?

In that part of the state, I blame the 9 months of winter they get...my company has a production plant in Holyoke. Shit just shuts down there and people are stuck in their houses as soon as it starts snowing.

I guess we could say that Massachusetts is the Florida of the north.

I thought you said you were a great fire department. If you were great, this fire would already be out.

If she was a cop telling him to off himself she'd have been in the clear.

We don't just jail people because they are a serious threat to society.

If she was a cop she could have shot him and been in the clear.

  • Someone was killed as a result of the defendant's actions.
  • The act either was inherently dangerous to others or done with reckless disregard for human life.
  • The defendant knew or should have known his or her conduct was a threat to the lives of others.

I think she ticks off #2 and #3 without question, but the #1 is a bit of a stretch to me. The mere act of texting did not cause the guy to die; he was solely the cause. Involuntary manslaughter is when I kill someone driving drunk, my action of driving the car and hitting the person caused the person to die. While she encouraged him to kill himself, she didn't possess his faculties and make him die (unless she had some sort of svenjolly hold over him.) I suppose that the fact that he was going to stop, and her encouragement messages made him go back in could be interpreted as a direct result of the defendant's actions though. If he never showed intention of stopping, would that make it a different case?

It's pretty simple. The judge had it right. He got out of his truck. She told him to get back in.

There's no question this is a case of some kind of detachment, and these were teenagers. But she pretended to not know he was dead to his parents, then indicted herself to her own friends.

She'll dona few years at most and still have the rest of her life in front of her.

He won't.

Western Mass gets a little weird. Some of the old mill towns are positively Rockfordian but no one pays them much attention because Boston keeps doing so well.
