From the pictures I've seen, she looks to be down several feet at the bow and listing to starboard.. The list doesn't appear to be enough to capsize her as they likely counter-flooded some port compartments, but you can see her bow is down.

There is some video footage of them pumping to keep the ship afloat.

Fucking Trump. Seriously what did it run into a container ship? Our vessels should be stronger.

Wow. That is a relatively small crew. By running bilge pumps, adjusting ballast and executing proper damage control, it shouldn't sink or capsize. You better believe that some people are in hot water with the Navy. No way this CO ever gets another command. The Officer of the Deck will be busted down in rank and most likely never advance again. That's a scary way to wake up in the middle of the night to alarms blaring over the intercom (1MC) on board a ship. Hope nobody was hurt.

Even if it's 100% the fault of the Japanese cargo vessel, the CO, OOD, and Quartermaster are all finished. They will be court martialed and a bunch of other guys will get non-judicial punishment that will effectively end their careers.

That sucks. You put in a lot of work to have something like that knock you out. Sorry to hear that. I was in from 1983-1989. Served onboard a sub tender in Italy and made it out to Pearl Harbor for some shore duty. You are right on the money about the impending discipline coming to the personnel involved.

Not good. CNN reporting that the seven missing are believed to be in a berthing space that was hit. That means those guys were most likely sleeping at impact and the compartment took on heavy flooding thus causing the duty damage control personnel to secure all hatches to contain the flooding. In short, they have all drowned and won't be recovered until they can get the ship in port and lifted enough to drain or pump out the sea water from the effected spaces. Ugh.

This is like a plate o' shrimp. I was just talking to a friend last night who is from a military family. He was an Air Force guy but his dad was a Navy man who was on the U.S.S. Indianapolis. This guy knows a lot about Naval vessels. He mentioned that he was shocked at how small a destroyer crew was these days, like 26 guys.

Maybe on a patrol boat the crew is that size, but a DDG like this ship has a crew of ~300, which is indeed small as a ship of that displacement 60 years ago would have probably 800 on the crew.

The new littoral combat ships do indeed have small crews (and also are overpriced and under-armed). They displace over 3,000 tons and have a crew of only 50 or so.

What a shitty way to die, getting locked in your cabin by your own guys while it slowly floods. Any way to give me 10 seconds to evacuate?

So this merchant ship that rammed us did a Uturn and didn't even report the crash for an hour.

This seems like its becoming obvious this was an intentional act, maybe somebody hacked that ship when they knew everybody was sleeping. I'm assuming that the ship was on auto pilot.

The Real Reason the US Navy Keeps Hitting Merchant Vessels
http://inhomelandsecurity.com/reason-na ... 0170912IHS

30 year retired Navy Capt (20 at sea) explains wtf happened.
It's along read so just assume...Thanks, Obama!

"There is no way on my ships that would have happened. We always had direct leadership. Leadership that was there, present and capable. I am willing to bet that those ships involved in incidents with merchants had all their sexual orientation, transgender training, and environmental training all completed at the expense of the safety and operational training.

If you put the emphasis on social issues, you get a social force. If you put it on operational issues, you get an operational force."

[further down]
"In addition, it has been obvious to me that SECNAV Mabus was able to transform naval leadership in a way to conform to his world view; [that he] fired or relieved those who did not conform to his views and promoted those that did. I think the top leadership is pretty rotten, although I am sure there is “good wood” in there somewhere."

"hard to starboard"--Capt Gloria
"ma'am, i think you mean to port or left"--helmsman
