No

Tonight on my way home after work, I bought 4 two liters in Lombard and some other stuff, then returned to my Cook County home. It is just as convenient as shopping at my local Jewel in Cook County.

I bought it to set off some Mentos volcanos in Preckwinkle's lawn.

Did something similar on a smaller scale driving home from the Loop to DuPage on Monday night. Could have bought my Diet Coke in Pilsen for the drive home, or near my house with my dinner. Waited until I got home. Cost them 44 cents in tax revenue, where otherwise I would have bought it in Pilsen and they would have received 10 cents in tax revenue.

Not hard to do the math and see that if 22-23% of the time somebody decides 'eh fuck it' the county will end up losing money overall.

Well, you see, that would only really matter if it was a desperate cash-grab rather than what it is, which is a public health issue. /s

Read it again...the whole fucking state may lose the funding.

Quote:
Cook County's sweetened beverage tax has landed the state in hot water with the feds, potentially causing roughly $87 million in federal food stamp money to be withheld if the problem isn't fixed, Illinois officials said Thursday

Bigger dumpster fire? Trump's Twitter account or Cook County rolling this out?

I love how the solution to stores wrongly charging SNAP customers is to make them go to the customer service desk to get a refund. What could go wrong?

Plus is the refund going on their SNAP card, or are they just being handed cash?

From the sound of it, cash.

Good loophole exploitation there: buy a bunch of soda, pocket the cash rebate, and spend it on smokes. So much for punishing unhealthy lifestyle decisions!

CH, why pile on the poor, beleaguered tobacco industry? They're paying more than their fair share already

This tax has gone too far! The 7-11 by me isn't doing the bring in and fill up your own cup promotion because of it.

We will find out soon enough if it is about money. Tax should be cancelled soon in Philly if it is.

I noticed there are some spots running about how this regressive tax is Actually Good, paid for by none other than America's foremost soda scold, Michael Bloomberg. Kinda weird to see what feels like an election ad in what isn't an election season on what isn't up for a vote. So what's the goal of these ads: discouraging unhealthy soda consumption or encouraging needed tax revenue?

I saw that the other day as well, and thought it odd.

I like Beverage Association ad where it starts by saying everyone's talking about this tax and then at the end it says we need to get more people talking about this tax.

I don't know, it sounds relatively successful:

Quote:
CNBC reports that the city estimates that the tax, which took effect on Jan. 1, raised $39.3 million through the end of June. The city had originally projected that it would take in $46 million in taxes by the end of June

If, like Philly, Cook County gets 85% of what they project/hope, I think they would be very happy.

I sense the outrage is fading and this tax will remain, unfortunately.

I like the casual moaning and groaning... it really sounds like we are overhearing a totally unforced conversation!

That isn't the definition of success. We could implement a county 50% income tax rate and raise way more than that in a month.
