I'm going within the next 24 hours to 6 months (don't break into my house please.) Open to any suggestions for things to go see or places to eat. I will have to eat the barf chili obviously.

Edit: apparently I have to say Ohio and not Carolina.

It's a small city. Everyone there will tell you to go to Montgomery Inn for Ribs. Most outsiders think they're meh. I like the Mount Adams area which looks like a mini San Francisco with the hilly roads. There's a couple of brew pubs between the stadiums on the River.

If you really want to have fun, go to this dive bar called O'Malley's in the Alley. It is funny stuff.

I went to that Big Boy on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River a few years back. I always wanted to try that place since it was featured in one of the Austin Powers flicks. Wow, that food is worse than Denny's or IHOP.

The Elias Big Boy franchise ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Boy_Restaurants ) split into 2 after BR in 2000. The main franchise spun off the Ohio/KY/Indiana/TN restaurants to a minor ownership group ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frisch%27s ), could account for the diff in quality.

Unexpectedly,

"Big Boy Restaurants International also licenses 279 Big Boy restaurants operating in _____________________"

Japan?! dafugg.

So Japan has more Big Boy restaurants than the original Elias + Frisch franchises combined maintain in the US.

There is one up near St. joes n Michigan. Right where I get off the exit. After visiting one years ago with my excited parents and all of us being thoroughly disappointed I have not given a second thought to stopping.

If y'all driving, stop by Milan, Indiana, on the way in. Not much to see, but kinda cool to be there.

Can confirm that Montgomery Inn is fantastic--get the Full Slab.

Whatever you do, do it early. When we went there a few years back for a Bears game it seemed the streets were all rolled up by 8pm.

The downtown shuts down right after work. The one exception is the area between the stadiums. They have built condo styled housing there with the reataurants and bars to boot. There is activity in that area past work hours.

Mt Adams would be akin to Lincoln Park, so there is an after work crowd at the bars in that area of the city.

Moerleins brewery if you like beers. It's across from the ballpark

I appreciate all the suggestions... never been there before but doing a short road trip probably down to Louisville and through horse country into Cinci.

Wasn't Cincinnati heavily settled by fun-abhorring Germans? Milwaukee must have gotten the fun Germans.

For being such a staple of roadside Americana, I have never actually seen a Big Boy. I think they're heavily a Michigan/Ohio thing the way Steak n Shake is an Illinois/Missouri thing, and those states are still terra incognita for me.

It wouldn't be so bad if people didn't call it something it clearly isn't. If you call it what it is, which is some Greek diner bullshit, people might appreciate it more. "Oh, you're going to Cincinnati? Try the Greek diner bullshit! And make sure you order it with spaghetti and cheese, that's the only way to do some Greek diner bullshit, anything else is not authentic." I mean, this is what people do in Rochester with the Garbage Plate.

I think we had it in Wisconsin as a kid. Up near door county I would guess. Otherwise it was that hell trip we took visiting family up in northern Wisconsin and the UP and then driving back up the east side of Lake Michigan.

See if you can arrange to have the Brennamans lit on fire in time for the 10 o'clock news.

Update post trip: If you are in the mood for some of the best fried chicken you've had, check out The Eagle. Served with a spicy honey sauce -- really fantastic.
