I'm heading to New York City for a week. Looking for any suggestions for food ,drink and anything else you can think of. I'm staying on the upper west side and will be doing a few of the touristy things. Any suggestions would be great.

Spark's Steak House on 46th. It's as old school as it gets.

See a Broadway show. You can do it for pretty cheap too with either the TKTS app or the booths.
Go to two Comedy Clubs. Comic Strip Live, and Comedy Cellar were my favorites. There are about 10 really good ones so just pick a few. Avoid the ones that offer you free tickets on the street though as most of them are hit and miss.
Obviously go to the WTC museum and the Statue of Liberty. Ride the Staten Island Ferry. It's free and a nice view.
Go to Times Square for an hour, realize it sucks, and then literally go anywhere else.
Go to the High Line if the weather is good. It's a former railroad that has been turned into a raised walking park.
The Financial district is a fun visit too if you love Capitalism.
On the Upper West Side, the subway will be your friend since you are a little far from most things. Uber or cabs work in a pinch.
Hit up museums too. Virtually all of them are good but that depends on your tastes.
The Intrepid Air Museum is good too.
You can get some good deals on night cruises with good views of the city and food. Groupon or Gilt City are good for that too.
Bars are literally everywhere. You don't really need to plan it. Just see a good one and go.
If you are fancy and want "clubs" head to the "Meatpacking district".
I would recommend doing a rooftop bar too. They are expensive but it is a cool experience.

For food, and I haven't been in a few years, is a place called "Hell's Kitchen" in Hell's Kitchen. It's not related to Gordon Ramsey.
Head to Little Italy and eat anywhere.
Eat Pizza, avoid the hot dogs.
Avoid Coney Island.

Don't expect a functional subway system like Chicago.

Joking aside, do go to Arthur Avenue and experience Little Italy. It keeps getting smaller but the surviving authentic businesses are still doing everything right. The delis, bakeries and butcher shops are old school delicious gems.

My favorite Italian joint in New York City, Lanza's closed in January. This place is great too, but it's VERY old school:

:) I wonder if anyone here knew about that.

I was going to say stay away from the Statue. Just not worth it with all the security last time we went.

Well you know everything, so you don't count. That place is amazing. I still love that good NY restaurants have guys older than Jorr serving you. And they tell you how your steak will be cooked.

I guess its not surprising that someone ignorant enough to have not heard of Usher would also think there were other people out here that stupid.

There's probably MANY people here who know he history of Spark's. Probably even a few who know about Umberto's Clam House.

Sure, everybody knows about Umberto's. How about Joe & Mary's in Brooklyn? Anyone?

That should have been on there especially where he is staying.

It really is a testament to NYC and also Chicago that it all cannot be done in a long weekend visit.

I was in the suburbs for 6 years and there are still things I didn't get to do that I wanted.

If I had to do one thing though every time I visited it would be to go to a comedy club. That may be the best thing about New York.

Hmm, I haven't done that Rick. I will be sure to try next time I go out there for personal reasons.

Do you have any thoughts on the Diamond District? I always ask locals if that's a good place to buy a diamond. I am noodling doing my 25th wedding anniversary out there, and it is going to be diamond upgrade time when that happens in a few years.

I wouldn't buy anything expensive in NYC.

Just get something on Blue Nile.

Manhattan architecture boat tour was pretty good -- relaxing and interesting details about the whole area. I wanted to check out The High Line while we were down there but we didn't have time.
Grab a bagel and head over to Central Park and walk around there if the weather is nice.

This.

Best family vacation I ever took, I did just that. Prolly pissed off every salaryman watching a teenager wondering around aimlessly at 8:30 on several straight workdays

And it is huge and interesting stuff is around every corner. It really is incredibly relaxing/enjoyable if you don't have any time constraints.
