I use a portable in the rec room or bedroom when it get's cold. It does a great job without using my furnace. In the winter when it's real cold,it does a great job assisting the furnace.

My parents never heated the house warmer than 68 and I think night time they dropped the system to 60. It's okay, he gathered enough heat during the summer with no A/C that we were grateful to be cool.
