Didn't know that last part. She may as well go play Joan of Arc somewhere else because what she did was a corporate cardinal sin.

When it comes to ESPN, they put up the facade of being journalists, but all of their sports coverage is intended to drive you to watch their live sports, which they spend 9 figures bidding on. That is why hockey is ignored and it is all NBA all the time in winter and NFL the rest of the year. They need to hype those products to get you to tune in to their coverage.

They are beholden to the demands of those leagues and will not cross certain lines. See the Simmons suspension, cancellation of Playmakers, and their withdrawal from the Frontline documentary on CTE. If the NFL makes a demand to protect the shield, ESPN obliges as they live or die by the shield. If ESPN was honest about he relationship, it wouldn't be so bad.

Here are her show's ratings for the first 3 months, compared with both 2016 at the same time slot, as well as the PTI lead-in audience. Audience is still in near fre-fall, and even the declining PTI audience is PTFB'ing when 6pm ET hits:

Senor Columnist can't defend her here. No one respects sponsors more than he does.

He will do what most of Twitter is doing and pretend it's about standing up to Jerry Jones and Trump while ignoring the entire advertiser aspect, which is really why she got suspended

If she eventually leaves ESPN, she'll land on the View, MSNBC, or CNN.

Is "boycott our sponsors" only not a fireable offense because the lawyers are still working on it?

He has been passive aggressively retweeting other people support for her all day.

Uh huh, yeah. David Hochberg could use the N-word and Dan would explain that there was an A at the end so it's fine.

It is hilarious to watch the Deadspin and their commenteriat twist themselves in knots to make Jemele Hill telling ESPN fans to boycott NFL sponsors a Good Thing that shouldn't have gotten her in trouble.

Morally, it's good, but how do you expect her to keep her job? How does she expect to keep her job? It almost feels like she's trying to go out on her terms before she can get whacked for bad ratings.

Who would hire her after this though? Never had strong ratings, pissed off ad buyers, etc. Even if a network is progressive, the people who sign the checks have to deeply question employing her.

so basically her career as a TV personality is over.

I know she started as a sportswriter

Would they be able to afford her, or is she willing to take a pay cut? The first part is an honest question, because I have no idea how much money those things are generating.

Bill Simmons says The Ringer is profitable. Pretty much every other person in the world with an opinion on it disagrees with him.

Grantland never made money and it had a higher readership so I believe that the Ringer is probably losing money

So does she come back in 2 weeks or do they quietly negotiate an exit over the next 2 weeks?

I don't think it can be quiet. They made a huge bet on that 6pm sportscaster. They would have to buy out Michael Smith as well.

Fox Sports [1] seems to be hiring any ex-employee they can. Even the "Cornball Brother" Himself, Rob Parker, is a regular on Skip & Shannon. And didn't schlereth do something stupid too? (Or was it just Salisbury?) He's doing color for fox NFL every week!

You expect anything less? This is from the same group as Gawker who still tried to justify showing Hulk Hogan's tape as good even after the huge judgment against them. I'm still waiting for Deadspin's retraction on the Michael Bennett issue.

Jerry Jones grandstands in a pathetic, transparent way, and the focus is on Jemele Hill.

Is he cutting Zeke Elliott, Dez Bryant, or Dak Prescott if they kneel? I think we all know the answer to that.

Well,, obviously Jerry Jones won't do shit, but you can't guarantee that a boycott of your sponsors (cross-check the Cowboys' sponsors with ESPN's, I'm sure there's significant overlap) as led by one of your own personalities wouldn't pick up serious steam. ESPN knows full well that lots of people are rightfully pissed off with how athletes are being treated right now.

Whether you agree with anything else, what Jamele did was dumb for someone that gets a big paycheck because of the sponsors she was mentioning.

And I think she knows it was dumb. She's not an idiot. But it seems that Black SportsCenter is either failing outright or at least falling short of expectations, so if it's a matter of losing your show, would you rather lose it for mere low ratings like so many others have done before or lose it for taking a principled stand against the racism of the NFL?

Agreed. That being said as a black man I would kneel or make some display if I played for the Cowboys. Jerry Jones isn't a slave master.
