My mom used to work holidays at Toy's R Us to bring in some extra money during Christmas. When she would pick me up from school, she would always have like a $1 small toy item(this was kindergarten) ...I was in heaven. I remember going into the Lansing store and going down the 1st aisle, the board games. Just massive as I recall. I loved checking out what new board games were out there.

on a side note, sears is still a great store. nobody in there, everything on sale, and they still have bears shirts

The Sears in Woodfield is up to something, at least with their service department. Probably close to 100 trucks or so(Sears branded service vehicles) in the lot. Maybe they are spinning off their service department into a new model? Maybe they are there to be sold? Maybe it's a huge meth operation?

im shocked they have been in debt this long

they should have modernized their business model 20 years ago, when the internet was starting to pop.

they didn't, so they die.

not sad.

Everyone says this kind of thing but ignores the fact that Amazon doesn't usually post any quarterly profits. Hard to compete with that model

Yeah and most losses now are for investments in tech not related to retail. Toys r us isn't building a Netflix like video service or working on drone delivery networks.

Amazon made $921M year to date, while producing nearly $18B in operating cash flow:

https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1018724/000101872417000100/amzn-20170630x10q.htm#s6AB5B930E50457519F69470DD6F05004

They made $2.4B during 2016. The company has taken a long term focus and invested heavily (to BR's point) in a whole range of other businesses. What was once just an online retail operation has sprouted into many other businesses. Most notably is Amazon Web Services, which is a monster business on its own.

Edit: The $18B in operating cash flow is a 12 month look back. Amazon is not following typical 10-Q accounting practices, and they are providing a full 12 month statement in their mid year quarterly report. First time I have ever seen a company do that.....

all they care about is cash flow, they bank on the future. Which is great if you always guess right. It's kinda like drafting. But if you guess wrong successively, it could go bad fast.

I saw 11.5B in sales last year, so not growing, but not that far in the shitter absent the debt.

Sad they are closing all 800 stores. Another big retailer gone. Whomever had Sears or JC Penny's in their retailer death pool just lost.

Good. I worked there one Kwanzaa season. Just awful. I think I have done four readings in my life, and this experience made the best one, though.

I wrote a piece about it and read the piece at a reading. Many laughs were shared.

Sears appliance-service arm is keeping them afloat I think. Of course maybe they just spin that off. Sucks for Toys R Us..should have been able to at least contract and survive, but some bad mgmt decisions set in stone years ago.

The toy section at Walmart/Target can't compete with a full Toys R Us offering..they just don't have enough room in that section of the store, so there was still a unique aspect to the business.

we didn't have small toy shops around here really. unless you count Kaybee or however it was spelled at the mall.

i have fond memories of toys r us. they had that crows nest by the returns area. i thought the king of the world must sit up there. all the video games systems in the glass case. you had to take a slip up to the register for video games and then go to a seperate place to pick up your game. loved that place.

We do a toy drive here at work each year around Christmas, and even as an adult I got excited about going to toys r us to pick out a bunch of toys.

The long term viability of toys r us was in doubt due to online retailing (obviously), but leverage killed this company, not online retailing.
