Post subject:  eBay store?

Anyone out there manage or know much about how eBay stores? I'm trying to buy a smartphone from a store with over 24k reviews and a 98% positive rating. The phone is classified at this eBay store as "new - other" because it doesn't come in the manufacturer's box and is also missing some of the accessories that would come with it if you bought it at a retail store (headphones, SIM card tool, etc.). It comes with the standard charger though and, according to the seller, is unused.

When I asked the store why isn't the phone coming in the standard box with all accessories, he wrote back saying:
Quote:
They are T-Mobile insurance swaps. We purchase them in bulk from a wholesale supplier.

The phone retails for about 750-800 and is being sold at the eBay store for 550. Just wanted to see if anyone familiar with what the seller is saying could offer some insight into what he means. I'm inclined to buy the phone. Returns are accepted and the shipping to me is free. Again, the store seems to be highly rated.

woah woah woah chief. 98% is terrible. it should be 99.8% or higher. you rarely see a rating that low.

Sounds like it's a write off for them.

Or the stuff is hot and they're just trying to recoup a portion of its retail value. It's well known that thieves resell on eBay. I think there was a story a few years back in the news about a family from one of the suburbs who was reselling stolen stuff.

You are protected through PayPal and eBay (almost) always favors the buyer in a return/dispute.

If you couple the reviews with the free shipping and return policy I would give them a shot.

I had neighbors that got friendly with the lady who ran the Ebay store, and I don't me in a relationship kind of way. They invited the proprietor over for dinner and would occasionally sell stuff in the store. Well, fast forward to the housing crisis, this neighbor couldn't make good on his mortgage. So the bank foreclosed.

I see them loading all their stuff in the back of the truck day after day. After two weeks or so, I finally went over to see what he was doing. Apparently, he was going through a liquidation sale ala chapter 7 and was hauling all his junk to the Ebay store.

There was a certain symmetry to the whole thing. One day, I'll give you other pieces of the story including the gimp that was walking around his back yard and the Ukrainian exchange student. Oh and there was a matter of his kid shitting in a zip lock bag.

The "New - Other" throws me off, but a T-Mobile Insurance swap sounds to me like it is phones people swapped out after buying a T-Mobile insurance policy on their phone. Maybe ones that never really had any damage. Maybe they are refurbished?

the other poster is right 98% is actually not THAT great on ebay for a seller with that many reviews.... you can read through feedback, see if there is a common complaint from buyers.

If they don't even have the original packaging I have to assume these phones were activated and then returned very quickly with little to no damage.
