Is that a shot?

No

Were you upset about the t0pless fat lady ads?

I meant like a CEO, COO etc.

If you've been married to a woman older than 35, you've seen a potential actress/model for those ads every single day. It was hard to spend two seconds of thought about those after seeing them the first time.

Unless you were stuck next to a bus with one

Black America sees it as saying blacks are dirty. It didn't really register with me but it's an ad someone on the marketing team should recognize will be controversial. Kinda like the ESPN draft thing.

In what sequence could Dove have featured people of different races for those who found it offensive to think it is not offensive?

White to Black to Asian?
White to Asian to Black?
Asian to White to Black?
Black to White to Asian?

I don't think you saw the ad.

Why do you say that?

There isn't a sequence.

Why was it even necessary to change races to imply cleanliness?

Why do you think they were implying one race is cleaner than the other?

I don't necessarily think that. I do believe that they were following the diversity trend in ads.

And picked a dumb way to do it in an ad for a cleaning product

I agree that they were saying their product appeals to a variety of people.

I think people reading hateful things into it, especially given the inclusive nature of their other ads, is a stretch.

Yes, there is.

Maybe it's because I'm a pessimist but any time I am coming up with a new idea/plan at work, I always think "How is this going to fuck me up in the long run?" How do they not have one person in a pitch meeting, during casting, during filming even, pipe up and say 'is it a good idea to have a soap commercial show a black person turning white?'

No persons of color in the decision making? Not their demographic maybe, so they were excluded out of any pre-screening commercials that were run for the 'target demographic'

Dove has gone out if their way in recent years to be inclusive, diverse, body positive, etc. in their ads. Given that, I would be surprised if a variety of people are not involved in either the creation or screening of their ads.

Then in my humble opinion whoever was involved in the process were not paying attention to current events, and what can be construed negatively in the public light. This is not a ground breaking ad that campaign. There are many ways to show soap cleans without running the risk of creating controversy. If Dove is not trying to stir up controversy, they should have paid closer attention to what might stir up controversy. Why create a potentially damning ad if something else will suffice just fine.

Interesting...Flip side: Dove runs the ad knowing it will create mild controversy (buzz). If you can get Trump or someone like him to tweet how much he loves Dove, and this is all nonsense in his most condescending way, Dove may have just increased sales.

if you've ever met an ad writer, you would know that they're not really all there. these controversies would never cross their mind because they're under so much pressure to deliver something that sells.

whenever i see "social media was all over it", i know it's another bullshit story.

And everyone is talking about "Dove" soap, so what if this was the plan all along?

Do something edgy on purpose.
Quickly retract it and apologize profusely.(great damage control).
All is forgiven, but product is in the headlines for a while.
