I didn't turn up a Darwin esque thread using the search function, so here we go:

Quote:
A woman and her 1-year-old son’s limbs were severed after they tried to crawl under a train in Georgia Thursday afternoon, WXIA reports.

Was this Faulkner or Mailer?

I idiotically crawled under a stopped freight train at 47th and East Ave in my yoot. Had no idea which way it was going so I figured I'd just go through in the middle of the car so I'd have time to adjust either way. Didn't start or anything and I have no idea why I didn't just climb over at a car junction.

I went to college at Illinois State, and I always saw people who lived on the other side of the tracks crawling under stopped train cars to get over to campus.

I went to ISU and had to cross the tracks to get to class. Never saw anyone doing anything that stupid but with a lot of popular
bars near those tracks I am actually surprised more people haven't been hit and killed by the trains.

Reread her short stories regularly. They never disappoint. The economy-yet-alacrity of language (like Hemingway for adults) she deploys in conveying pretty much the universe of shitty human behavior makes her one of our greatest literary treasures, alongside Sinclair Lewis.

Yep. I am surprised no one ever died doing it.

I'm reminded of the old Doris Day movie:

"With 4,you get leg roll."

"the dead, dumbass, and dying" is pretty much what I remember the "grown up" conversation being at my grandparent's house when I was a teenager. I always called it "who's dead or dying?" cuz that always seemed to be the go-to conversational topic over here back in the 90s.

There were always takes of some distant relative having health problems or who was one foot in the grave and thus me and my brother always dipped out to television or remembered why we brought video games over. Dumbass also fits into the old "who's dead and dying?" label cuz no news travels quite like bad news and some cousin fucking something up was always easy conversation to have.

At least near the end when my grandpa outlived everyone from his generation he was more keen to tell me crazy stories from the past as opposed to "who's dead and dying?" --- but hey give it another 30-40+ years and I'm sure we'll all be the same way =]
