Post subject:  We've lost all our heros.
So talking to my son last night and we got into a mini argument about this country's history.

I was talking about George Washington and how he was a great man and all the great things he did. Then my son comes back with, he wasn't so great, he was a slave owner, blah blah blah. I was like shit, wtf. So only based on pride, i defended old George. But after like an hour or arguing, I came to agree w/ my son's view of GW. I had to concede since history doesn't lie.

He went on further to kill Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, and many many others.

I remember when I went to school, our fore fathers and others who built this country were taught in all glory and did nothing wrong. They walked on water and were the ultimate heros.

But sadly, everything's been destroyed. Yes, what I describe above was more myth than reality. but don't we sort of need myth in our culture? All our hero's from Daniel Boone to Lincoln to FDR did some really bad stuff. Do we really need to teach our kids now all the bad stuff? Can't we just do it like the old days and teach only the good stuff? If we don't have our own hero's, where are we headed.


Caveat - one story I always thought was bs was Custer's last stand. Back when I was a kid, the teachers taught it like Custer was a military genius and how the battle of little bighorn was so glorious and a heroic fight. When the teacher said Custer fought with only 200 men vs 2000 Indians, I thought Custer must have been one of the biggest idiots that ever lived. But then I thought I'm just a kid, what do I know, I guess the teacher is right he was a glorious battle.

At least my son has to give me that one!

Weaknesses aside, those were three pretty amazing people. They actually had foresight.

The founding fathers are still heroes.

They did what they had to do to build a society from scratch.

If you scrutinize and take anyone's life out of context you can make them out to be a bad person.

With hindsight, it may sound cold to say, but the fact is, in that day, slavery was like the iphone - it was just a quick way to get things done. Oppression was part of the times. Shit, people legally dueled to the death out on the streets for simple matters of humiliation. These days, that is not the case, so why do we spend time comparing past actions to modern day standards? Why aren't we up Italian peoples' butts for all the people the Roman Empire enslaved, oppressed, and crucified, etc.? Because we understand that they rocked sandals 24/7 back then. That's why.

Its all part of the agenda - i.e. make them pay instead of making myself better, which takes hard work. It is a lament, and lamenting is for lazy losers.

Winners get up, dust themselves off, and move on.

Just be a good person who works hard, and don't worry what's going on in the next guy's cubicle - or hundreds of years ago.

Nobody's coming to bring things back to that era, but if that era didn't happen, none of us would be here enjoying our iphones!

Coach is a horrible human being in a lot of ways. However, he is a fantastic human being in a lot of ways as well and he brought us a Super Bowl. Put all his actions on the scales and I think he comes out OK.

I think this is a mature approach.
