Post subject:  Ancestry / DNA testing
Just curious if anyone has done one of these tests to find out where your ancestors come from or maybe you have
a family member who has done it. I ended up getting one for each of my parents for Xmas this year and it seems
pretty interesting. There are a lot of companies doing it now and I did a little research and picked the one that I
thought gave the best value. The base package is selling for $59 for the main players in the industry which is what I ended up
purchasing. Selfishly I wanted to find out so I knew a little more about my own background, and with both my folks
getting older and still alive this was the chance to do it.

Cool. I have heard a lot of people question the results and I am not expecting perfection but for the price I figured it was worth a
flyer. I didn't go with the Ancestry company but another one of the bigger players. Looks like they have some interesting tools
and ways to break out the results.

My brother did it. I'd say it's a fun conversation-starter for a family party but I doubt the accuracy.

I was able to claim to my wife's family that I'm 1% Asian - but I think the whole world is at least 1% Asian.

Some of my friends have done it and have tried to get me to do it too. I'm not interested. Not only do I not care but what if I found out I'm black? That would be devestating.

yea even if you have nothing to hide its probably not the best idea to just gift your DNA to the government

Nobody under the age of 40 cares about privacy any more. I don't think they even know what it is. Those that do care are considered mentally ill.

My ex-wife's stepfather was adopted by a prominent Irish-American family in Evanston. His grandfather was a mayor. Anyway, he went looking into his biological background. One day I came to his house and he was all depressed. I asked him what was wrong and he said, "Would you believe it? I'm a fuckin' Polack!"

I've been tempted to check for certain health conditions. Lady had a 23andme done early the pregnancy because of her age and it being a high risk pregnancy. It's how we knew it was a boy at like 11 weeks and he didn't have any extra chromosomes.

I just did the 23&Me ancestry kit black Friday deal. The sample arrived at the labs and I should get results back by January. Will update when I get results

Don't do it. It's a scam. I sent in my DNA and they used it for produce.

Did this. Had relatives show up in the results even though I did not know they had done it too and had provided no info about them. Will probably give out as a holiday gift.

Fair, to a point .... I actually know where my labs are sent to .... either on-site or a place a mile or so away.

I was always wary of them as Ancestry was run by the Mormons (with their disturbing registries), but thought about it recently until a Black woman went public with results that didn't include any African lineage.
