While it was far from the full-scale reparations sought by some as penance for the horrors of slavery and continuing racial injustice, Cameron Whitten, the 27-year-old activist who organized the event, said there was one similarity: It made attendees feel as if their pain were valued and understood.

“It was only $10, but when I saw them I saw their eyes light up,” he said. “What I saw there was that people felt like they were finally seen.”

a good buddy of mine raised in the midwest his entire life, has been working for the city of portland for the last 3 years. he has always been pretty liberal but he said this is a few levels up from what he is used to. safe spaces, reparations, privileged, patriarchy, microaggression, heteronormative, are words infused in just everyday language.

there are protests at city hall almost every day, minority women promoted to levels of incompetence all the time, and they have regular social justice workshops.

so this kind of stuff doesn't surprise me in the least.
