Leave it to a Jesuit to think he can improve something written by God himself.

'lead us not into temptation'

He's arguing that god doesn't lead us into temptation, we do that ourselves. I always interpreted it as lead us along the righteous path... not asking god to not tempt us. What do I know.

The Pope errors. God does allow temptation.

1 Corinthians 10:13 --- "He will not suffer you to be tempted beyond that which ye are able to bear, but with the temptation will also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.'

God let the Devil have his way with Job to test him.

The same with Christ when he was in the wilderness.

I do enjoy at Easter and Christmas when the priest says 'the lord be with you' and half the place still goes 'and also with you'.

And what the ever-loving-fuck does that even mean?

No no no, we don't want the Lord to be with YOU per se, just your spirit....so you got that going for you...which is nice...

They didn't change the apostles creed. Just made us say the nicene creed. I still don't have it down yet, I have to read it off the cheat sheet because if I try to go from memory, my brain goes right to the apostles

The one that really annoys me is "it is right and just". I liked 'it is right to give him thanks and praise'. Sounded more formal.

It had the feel of a state legislature spending the time to officially designate a state bird, a state pie, a state weather pattern, or a state rodent:

"Look! We did something! We made changes!"

I agree with Peeps, Hank and V.

Nothing needed to be changed.

Ridiculous.

I believe the word "daily" is just made up in the phrase "give us this day our daily bread." One of my teachers said no one could figure out the translation for the word that was actually written, so they just made it "daily."

I think it was actually “Aldi bread”.

I remembered this....vaguely...and so went and looked it up. Apparently, the original Greek in Matthew employed a word never used before (Matthew invented it), and his interpreters later assumed that he was trying to coin a term for a word in Aramaic (and possibly Hebrew) that meant . . . many things. Then it got translated in Latin and then (for us) English, where it sounds really weird and the original meanings are obscured. Thanks, Interpreter's Bible! It's good to have these as e-copies.

Family Guy changed Meg’s voice, and that worked out well. It’s reasonable to think this can too.

I realize Family Guy isn’t 100% fiction, but it’s the best comparison I can think of.

Post subject:  Re: Changing the Lord's Prayer

For the sake of brevity just accept that "... And with thy spirit" is the correct response and there's no intelligent argument against it. It's not something directed at the officiant per se ... Paul used variations on it in his Epistles, and I forget the book ... well, the internet tells me Ruth, where Boaz rolls into town and says "The Lord be with you" and they say "The Lord Bless you" ... close enough. The service is supposed to be mostly comprised as a direct lift or close approximation of verses from the Bible.

If there's no real basis to do so, why did MANY decide to change it up? Probably for the same reasons MANY churches think it's real f---ing neato to reinvent the wheel every week by re-writing the order of service (or what decent people who don't think they can outdo God via their creative writing skills refer to as The Liturgy) -- because MANY people are about as sharp as a sack of wet mice.

As to the 'daily' thing tommy wrote about while I was typing out this idiocy, I'll just say that I've never honestly thought much it, and that my (probably under-informed) understanding was that it was meant as an all-encompasing request to indicate our faith that He'll provide for our needs - not just the stuff we 'know' we need (e.g., food, water, shelter, internet) but also the stuff we have no idea we need (like, say, in four hours from now when Yugo hits you and you need a Band-Aid for each of the two cuts you suffered as a result).
