We sure used to be. We stood up for what was right! We fought for moral reasons, we passed and struck down laws for moral reasons. We waged wars on poverty, not poor people. We sacrificed, we cared about our neighbors, we put our money where our mouths were, and we never beat our chest. We built great big things, made ungodly technological advances, explored the universe, cured diseases, and cultivated the world's greatest artists and the world's greatest economy. We reached for the stars, and we acted like men. We aspired to intelligence; we didn't belittle it; it didn't make us feel inferior. We didn't identify ourselves by who we voted for in the last election, and we didn't scare so easy. And we were able to be all these things and do all these things because we were informed. There are only two examples of infinity: The universe and human stupidity and I'm not sure about the universe.

We are so wealthy that being homeless here is basically a choice. That is despite the fact that we have less social safety nets and regulation than most of the developed world.

If a person is willing to work hard and make good decisions, they can earn a living that would make most of the planet blush.

We have a sophisticated and mostly fair legal system, immense wealth, a culture of freedom, and ample opportunity to help others and lead a meaningful life.

America has problems, but if someone wants to act like it isn't an amazing place to live in an amazing time relative to the rest of human history, he's probably a miserable bastard.

I'm pretty sure that's not true.

I like the culture of freedom idea, though. I wonder if everyone feels this way. (I don't know if they do or if they do not.)
