I'm pretty sure that's not true.

I like the culture of freedom idea, though. I wonder if everyone feels this way. (I don't know if they do or if they do not.)

They just lack TWTW

Winning World War II put U.S. troops in many different parts of the globe. The US has military bases in other countries, but it does not rule the countries as an occupying force typically associated with empires.

I'd say it's the fact that Americanism isn't defined by any specific ethnic background. Which is why shared values and culture are more important here than anywhere. This is an experiment that could easily break apart if we embrace typical tribal allegiances rather than our shared values.

When people all over the world rightfully scoff at the idea of the US "melting pot" being unique, they have a point as most of the major Western cities of the world are full of people who look different. What most people dont understand is the melting pot refers to the lack of a dominant culture. If you have ever been to France you can begin to understand why immigrants have a hard time integrating there. French culture is lovely but also oppressively French. I spent two weeks in Paris and never wanted to leave a place more in my life despite it being my favorite city. It doesn't leave much room for anything else. Perhaps it shouldn't but, that is a different topic.

I think the US is great in part because we had the wisdom to see what a post-WW2 world could mean for us and everyone else. Sailing the world's largest blue water navy for more than half a century has kept and reinforced the idea of free trade that has lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty. It's come at great expense to us. While homogeneous European countries of 6 million people (that Bernie Sanders somehow wants us to emulate) have been able to spend on their own people lavishly, we expended a large sum to be the world police force and there was nobody else that could have done it.

The afterglow of WW2 is starting to fade, though. Military advances are making the oceans smaller and carrier groups less of a deterrence. New alliances are being forged. The world will be one of competing regions and alliances within those regions. The US can no longer be the lone force to stop a country from closing their shipping lanes.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a country being passionate about their culture and way of life.

The greatness of America is more than just it's military or capitalist economy. The belief in a Constitution with a limited government is unique in the world. In Communist countries and socialist countries they believe that the State is essentially the God of the society. In America many Americans look to Judeo-Christian values as a basis for equality, freedom and limited government. In the Communist countries there are police states that spy on citizens, build walls to keep people from leaving the country and Communists are responsible for 100,000,000
deaths in the 20th century. Socialist Europe has seen a loss of religious values, a declining birthrate, politically-correct politicians who reject national sovereignty and an incoming migrant class largely Muslim that will destroy most of Europe in 50 years. If the United States follows Europe's model the country will be destroyed by the end of this century.

Those countries may have people that look different. They may even call them citizens. But you're seeing across Europe right now that these people aren't actually accepted. And they don't really want to be.

There is some truth here. We talk about how Chicago is a segregated city (and in many ways, yes it is) but that is nothing compared to most European cities.

Well that was my point that I likely fudged. It's inherently easier to integrate in the US as we are the melting pot culturally. You can see the less culturally stringent areas of Europe integrate better, with a country like France always having issues. They also have a lot of immigrants due to their colonial past. And as such, people with distinct culture there are wondering at what level they want to retain some of it as the areas these people are coming from would never entertain the concept of changing their culture. Parts of Europe that have flirted with far-left concepts for 40 years have seen their birth rates drop significantly. They now need to import tax payers and in the case of Germany, their male population is so decimated that in a few short decades the million people they just welcomed will drastically change that country when they eventually have children with German women. These are scary things, and rightfully so. Of course just talking about them gets you branded a racist, which is absolute insanity.

Much of what is going on in the US has some deep seated roots in that but made all the more difficult as people see the US as a country of immigrants. It's more nuanced than that, though. We really only had a period of mass migration for 30 years and it was mostly from Europe. Most everyone is living on the bones of others who might have looked like them, or likely didn't, so the Native American argument is kind of moot. So what is the US? I think if you had to come to an academic understanding of the roots of this nation then you say it it certainly has roots in European ideals. The Magna Carta is inspiration for the Constitution, written by men who were greatly influenced and schooled by Great Britain and Europe. Many of those people who would face ridiculous challenges moving west to colonize areas that neither the Spanish or the French wanted to touch for fear of violent death, were done so by European settler families who had such an unwavering faith in god that they could settle on the edges of the known world in Comanche country. To me those people truly colonized this country and made America what it is. So what right do the descendants of those people have to maintain that, if they even can?

Again, this is all stuff that gets you branded as a racist but will need to be debated at some point if we want to have a peaceful future where we all go back to being Americans first, and whatever else second or third.

you know what always gets me? when people go "what nationality are you?" you're always saying stuff like "german polish and russian" or something.... nobody ever just says "american" even tho there's a pretty darn good chance you were born here and your whole life has been shaped by this culture/media/zeitgeist/whatever.

we gotta get motherfuckers to start saying they're american dammit!

This isn't just an American issue. My second cousins in Australia see it as well, where there is a significant split between the 20-somethings born and raised there who think of themselves as Australian, vs. those who think of themselves as Chinese, Greek, Vietnamese, etc.

My dad came here in the 1950s. He and his brothers drilled into my head and the heads of all of my cousins that we are Americans first, second, and third. Only one of my ten cousins never bought into that, he married a girl who came here from the old country as a teenagers and whose parents still own property back home, and he really doesn't think of himself as American.
