I guess my larger point is that it isn't security that stopped in flight hijackings. It was other factors as the TSA (and its predecessors) are pretty fucking incompetent

You're not worried about the average guy, though, you're worried about the person who wants to be able to beat the screening so they can do something nefarious in or near the plane.

The fact is that metal detectors were installed in 1973 after which hijackings declined precipitously. After further security measures in 2001 we have not had a single one.

Given the rarity of hijackings from 1987 to 2001 (0 before 9/11) is it really additional security measures that made us safer or is it just that no one has really attempted it? I'm going with the latter.

Most of the "non fatal shootings" are things like a gunshot being fired near the campus after-hours or on a weekend. If you go through the list you'll see it's pretty much bullshit.

The Everytown list did not include the recent and highly publicized shooting spree in Isla Vista, Calif. In that case, the shooter was a student at the University of California at Santa Barbara, and he targeted other students, including women living in a sorority house near the campus. Seven people died, but the shooting wasn’t technically on campus, so it didn’t make the list.
