Yeah, it's not code for something. There has been a movement—perhaps unwitting, but a movement nonetheless—to "Appreciate Greatness" w/r/t LeBron for far more than his basketball, marketing and business acumen, and it has yielded some absurd results. CH has talked about this a few times when it comes from Deadspin or Dan Bernstein quoting Deadspin.

I like how when annoying celebrities like George Clooney or Matt Damon or Sean Penn speak their minds, everyone writes them off, as they should. But when Steve Kerr or Lebron James speak, we are all supposed to be in awe about how they have the pulse of the nation and they speak so poignantly.

Does it really happen though? The only example I can think of is a few NFL players saying "Yeah, I think you should stand for the anthem but I understand why others would kneel". People make fun of Tom Brady for presumably being a Trump voter even though he never really says anything interesting about anything.

Let me try and put it another way. If we make a list of the athletes that are applauded for sharing their political views, most if not all of them would be saying liberal things. I just think it's amusing. If Kevin Durant came out and said "2nd amendment rights are all that matter and the dead kids are just what we have to deal with" I don't think he'd be getting much media celebration outside of the ultra conservative blogs that morons read.
