I know who proposed it but I don't think it's a bad idea. Not sure about 25 years though.

Either you're a citizen or not. We (as in humans) tried the partial-citizen thing before and it worked horribly.

It's telling what kind of public people want to restrict voting rights.

Either your politics have merit or they don't.

Not having the right to vote is something MANY minorities know a lot about. I think waiting 5 to 10 years is a good compromise. You won't forget who restricted this right.

The poor and minorities shouldn't vote

A lot of them already vote. Haven't you ever heard of the DMV (Department of Mexican Voters)?

Cultural and political forgetfulness are part of life, so we might.

Minorities, the poor in general, chicks.

I don't think we can afford to do this second-class thing, and I tend to be anti-immigration (but not anti-immigrant).

To be honest, I think only those who own land (and not land in, say, Hegewisch or Indiana--like normal land) should be able to vote.

Really? I think our history makes that a problem. I also think the non landowners would overthrow the government fairly quickly.

No, I was kidding. Still, as a non-landowner, I'm not sure if I am pushing for justice or if I am selfish.

Yeah, that's the problem with restricting "chain migration" too. You and I can bring a relative over from another country but these people won't be able to. You've created different levels of citizenship.

The problem isn't really immigration- legal or illegal- anyway. The problem is the entitlements/welfare that many of these people receive because there simply aren't enough jobs for everyone. I believe Milton Friedman made the argument that illegal immigration is actually better than those who come here legally and are immediately eligible for all kinds of benefits. The illegal immigration is the closest thing possible to the pre-welfare state immigration of the early 20th Century. Those people are coming for jobs.

Prior to 1914 there were no limits on immigration. The U.S. had open borders. Open borders aren't necessarily a bad thing, although most Americans don't support such a thing today. And it's reasonable not to support such a thing because there is a huge difference between open borders with jobs waiting and opens borders where those who are already here will have to support the immigrants. Sadly, too many people are simply xenophobes.

Big difference between being able to bring over my child or parent and bringing over my 72 cousins. And while I don't agree that we should disallow voting for any person granted citizenship, it is telling that the democrats are very much against that to the point where they would take nothing over that. They are simply votes to democrats.
