Consider the sources.

And that is a stunningly stupid idea pushed by the worst among us.

One of the dumbest ideas ever. Police aren't great at shooting and we expect dozens of teachers to handle the pressure and be great shots. Can you imagine what happens when a teacher accidentally shoots a student? When some angry wild beast of a football player overpowers some small teacher and takes their weapon? When the police rush in and mistake an armed teacher as the active shooter?

I do not think classroom teachers should be armed.

But a few people throughout campus armed and trained would be helpful.

It's a colossally dumb idea, but I believe the thinking is that armed teachers will be a deterrent, not that they will actually get in gun battles. Again, very dumb because these shooters aren't rational and they usually know they're going to die. This last guy who lived was a rarity.

I think more kids would get shot through accidents, carelessness or stolen guns in school very year if this actually happened.

Maybe its just the area I live, but most high schools around here have an on duty Police Officer in the building everyday.

They had a armed guy with body armor. A handgun probably isn't a match for an AR15. Like you've pointed out these kids expect to die. This kid could have gotten away if he actually had a plan.

We have a school officer who is armed, but he has like 6 buildings he covers. No way he can do that very well.

I would be in favor of a couple administrators in each building being armed so that there are always a couple people in each building ready.

It makes more sense to simply hire more cops, but in public education it's a zero sum game, currently being won by people who want to starve it out.

Including things almost universally accepted as effective, like early childhood education.

i would be in favor of hiring more cops too. But there is not going to be funding for that any time soon.

If we are arming these people in the school, are they granted the police standard of feeling threatened as justification for using lethal force?

The only places in the USA not protected with armed guards are schools. Convenience stores have better security.

Handguns are not used in mass school shootings.

Croissant America I'm aware of this. Kids aren't shooting up schools with handguns. What gay guy are you crushing on today? I bet you're the catcher.

If they are going to be armed they have to be able to fire if needed. Obviously it has to be a real and credible threat.

Kids have shot up schools with handguns, and more effectively than with an AR-15 I might add. See Virginia Tech, which still is the deadliest school shooting.

Banning the AR-15 does nothing to stop such shootings, which is why I'm very strongly against the banning of the AR-15.

I know. Just pointing out another issue with giving all teachers guns.
