The community I live in has had it's streak of crime lately. In the last 4mo, 2 robberies but last week a guy held up a woman with a gun and sexually assaulted her. This happened early in the morning hours.

I also work overnights and mostly not in the best neighborhoods. A lot of vagrants and such around. And I bike to and from work most of the times if I can't catch the last bus. So I feel a bit vulnerable if someone comes up to me with harm.

So I am thinking about getting a gun for protection. I want one that is small and for beginners. I don't really need to kill anyone with it, just use it as a deterrent. I've heard that most of the times, if you get into a situation, just pull your gun out will scare away the perp.

So what beginner small guns do you guys recommend? My budget is not much. So I'm not going to buy something that's like $1000. Maybe around $300 is my budget.

You could start with a stern "Thanks, but I'm trying to cut back."

I've been watching a lot of youtube videos on guns.

I am surprised so many people conceal and carry. at least it seems that way.

Is that real? I mean what are the chances you're going to get into a gunfight somewhere on the road? At home I can understand if someone breaks in, but i think the chances are pretty low you'll be pulling out your gun and firing if you conceal and carry.

I think you should pursue climbing. If you get up that tree fast enough you could probably drop a deuce on their head and neutralize the threat. Everybody goes home alive and you got to live out a dream.

1 move
2 get a new job
3 if 1 and 2 are not possible- get a good pair of shoes you can run fast in.(run forest, run)

The US doesn’t need another gun in the hands of another untrained user on the street. One that will likely be taken from you & used to kill you vs you killing any “bad guy”

Good luck.

Ya I thought about that too. I’ll probably end up hurting myself.

I’m really not a gun type of guy. Think of me like a Woody Allen type without the pedophilia.

I have guns. Pistols, rifles, shotguns. I have been trained to use them. As the kids are now all in college, and I work a rotating shift that includes nights, leaving her home alone, my wife was talking about training to shoot, maybe getting her own pistol. I am all for the training idea, and who knows, she may actually like it- her Dad and brother do. No doubt she could shoot better than I do.

But I simply asked her," Are you really ready to KILL a person?" Not scare them, not wound them, but KILL them forever. If that answer is no, don't get a gun. That is the worst outcome of firing a gun, and you have to consider it will happen every time the trigger gets pulled. If you are not ready to kill someone, it may get you killed. I got her some pepper spray that is handier to keep around and use. Sounds like that may be a better idea for you as well. Spray and make your get-away.

I had my concealed carry permit and let it lapse. I just did not find enough times where I was secure enough to carry to justify the risks, and did not want to pay the fees to renew. My son got his when he turned 21 and carries quite often. I can and do carry here on the farm when I think I might have a shot at a woodchuck or possum or muskrat, but that is open carry, and not as often as I should.

Where do you live? Do the laws allow you to conceal carry?

Go to a gun range and try some rental pistols. Get comfortable just shooting.

Trampas and The Virginian on The Virginian know how to handle guns. You should watch that show.

Does a guy with a handgun on a bike also beat an AR15?

maybe i'll go w/ pepper spray. but if someone has a gun it won't help much.

then i was thinking maybe i am overreacting. if i do that conceal thing I think there is probably a .0000001 percent chance I would ever pull out a gun. It's like when talking w/ cops they say they rarely pull out their guns in their careers.

I've talked w/ coworkers about it last night. None of them carry. One is a gun guy but he does it for sport. I dont know if i am ready to kill someone. I'd probably be like those school deputy's. When it counts I'll pussy out.

Woody Allen made allusions to Russian literature. You're more of a Tobias Funke without the acting aspirations.

ok you got me back on the gun bandwagon. I researched this on youtube and it got really good reviews. It small and affordable and probably would be what I'm looking for.

How come all these video's say a .22 is not a good self defense weapon?

A handgun chambered for .22 is not going to have the muzzle velocity and weight to do much damage to your attacker, especially when adrenaline is at its peak.

But considering one of your first instincts was to imagine ways to murder your neighbor's troublesome pet, maybe take a self defense class instead, or invest in a home security system (MANY burglars have said awill system will deter them from robbing a particular house) and have your windows and doors checked/reinforced.
