Quote:
Starting Monday, calorie counts will have to be posted at thousands of restaurants, grocery stores and movie theaters, representing a milestone change in how the food industry shares information with the American public. The rule, an oft-forgotten provision of Obamacare, is being pushed over the finish line by a Trump nominee, FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, who says the labeling requirement is simply about transparency.
....
The menu labeling rule, which was finalized in 2014 after repeated delays during the Obama administration, applies to chains with 20 or more locations that sell prepared foods similar to what you might get in a restaurant — a definition that applies to everything from appetizers to beer and wine listed by the glass. Businesses are supposed to post calories for each food on their menu right where a consumer will see it as they decide what to order.

Great rule. Great job Trump FDA!

Those are great. Having that information makes it very helpful to make smarter decisions. Just like we want to have ingredient lists on food we should also have nutritional information.

Dr. Gottlieb is an interesting fellow. They have him on CNBC all the time. He seems like the type of guy that understands the need for reasonable regulation, while helping companies get drugs to market faster.

It's not just about total calories its about the types of foods you consume, I doubt this will make this fat nation any fitter, but cool I guess.

Sure give people more information. That really is a potential good tool. I doubt though that many people actually pay any attention to it though.

Disagree. It's posted right on the menu board.

Today I went to Panera for breakfast and the sandwich had the calorie counted posted on the board of 490 calories. I still ordered the sandwich but knew my lunch choice at my work's cafeteria would be on the lighter side.

You'd be surprised how many calories restaurants manage to stuff into salads, soups, chicken entrees and other seemingly "healthy" options.

Great, I didn't know that eating that full slab of ribs with a Pepsi and French Fries, Pop Corn full of butter and salt at the movie theatre would be bad for me. Thanks big brother!

I said it is a good tool. My opinion is many people do not use it. Example I know damn well a Big Mac is more fat and calories than a Kale smoothie. If I choose to eat a Big Mac I know that ahead of time. They are trying to aim this at people that either do not care, are poor or are simply not educated enough in other ways to choose correctly.

i've gotten this cream of chicken w/ wild rice soup a few times at Mariano's, it's pretty tasty....and oddly enough I felt like the "cream" part wasn't really cream since its sorta thin (the cream soups at Chuck's are solid at room temperature, for example). Last time i made the mistake of looking at the nutrition info though and it was like 320 calories for a 1/2 cup....that's more than a 1/2 cup of Ben & Jerry's ice cream. And yes I realize it's a cream soup, but I was still surprised it was that high

Pasta, as much as I love it and miss it, is so deadly calorie/carb wise.

If you haven't tried spaghetti squash, give it a shot. It's kind of like hashbrown noodles, but like 1/100th the carbs/calories of pasta. Very tasty.

Here are the ingredients for a salad at cheesecake factory:
Grilled Chicken, Fresh Avocado, Mixed Greens, Crisp Tortilla Strips, Carrots, Cilantro and Cashews. Tossed in a Citrus-Honey-Peanut Vinaigrette

Having the info is better than not having it. No, it's not going to make someone that wants a BigMac suddenly switch to rice cakes, but maybe there are 2 things under consideration and they go with a 400 calorie choice over a 550.

They are helpful on the drinks too if you are running into a gas station, etc. to grab something. I drink the unsweetened Pure Leaf, so calories aren't a factor, but when you see all the flavors lined up in the cooler and the 'sweet' is 160 calories, and the 'extra sweet' next to it is 240, maybe it influences the choice.

Calories are literally all that matters. The rest of it is junk science from fatties who still want to eat a bunch and lose weight.

EAT LESS
DO MORE

Yeah I don't think MANY people realize just how many calories are packed into some salads. There are a lot of cases where you are actually better off eating a burger than a salad. (If you eliminate the cheese & mayo from the burger and drink water)

It’s not terrible. It’s not rice but it’s a decent substitute. As with all things it what you mix into it that matters as far as taste and health.
