You should ask yourself why people are trying to scare you. AI has been around for decades, and the continued technological advancements will be a net positive. The likelihood of an extinction level event is probably slightly more likely than an asteroid slamming into Earth and killing us all. Man has been close to near extinction events, and we're not getting rid of those weapons.
