So I haven't been able really to share this with all of you. Some of you had heard but today feels like an appropriate time to tell our story.
On Feb 14th this year, the day after a blood test at our GP, my wife was rushed to the emergency room for severe anemia. It was discovered that the anemia was caused by blood loss from a large cancerous tumor in her colon. She had surgery in March to remove approximately a third of her colon and several lymph nodes and was ultimately diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer. Today is the final day of her 6 month chemotherapy regimine and she's finally free of the pokes and prods and needles and chemicals that have been ravaging her body for the last 7 months. At the moment... it looks like we got it knocked out.
I tell you this story because she was only 44 years old when this all started. She has no history of this in her family. The oncologist has been saying that they're detecting this more frequently than before in younger than ever patients. My message is... get checked. Get screened. See your doctors. I have met a lot of you guys and not one of you really strikes me as someone who would really object strongly to a large object inserted in your ass, so even tho7gh you might think hey I'm only 40 or hey I'm not 50 yet, and for guys like jorr who are over 87, get checked. Please. I can't tell you how terrifying this year has been for us. Anyone who knows DW and I know we wouldn't know what to do without each other. I've been struggling with self destructive thoughts for months now. So know that you're doing it not just for you but for your wife or girlfriend of husband or boyfriend and for your kids.
It's no big deal. It doesn't hurt. It's, as my wife puts it, "a shot and a nap".
Get it checked. Catch it early if there's something. Don't go thru what my wife had to go through.
That's all.

Jeez. Glad to hear things seem to be in a good place but that must have been hell on the two of you. Hopefully she continues to improve and it’s all in the rear view.

I'm so sorry to hear about your wife's health issues, Darkside. I wish you and her the best, and I'm glad to hear her situation is improving.

I know how difficult your situation must be since my wife is also struggling with a major health problem.

Take care.

Fuck man, I'm sorry for what had to have been an emotional roller coaster. Very kind of you to think of the bored given what you're going through. Glad she and you are able to put it in the rear view. Stay strong.

I am very sorry to hear this news of you troubles. I am glad it is looking up now. I do have a colonoscopy scheduled in October. I had been having them regularly since some pre-cancerous polyps ten years ago. Find it early and it is tons easier.

Fuck cancer, and I'm happy that she is recovering.

I have to have mine done at the hospital because I'm a heart valve replacement patient and on blood thinners. I was amazed that the waiting time was four months to get an appointment there, but I'm going in early January for my 5-year retest.

This year must have been hard as hell on both of you...especially her, of course. I'm very glad it seems like she is going to be OK.

Very happy to hear things are looking up and everything seems to be fine Darko!

I saw blood in the toilet at 27 and knew something was wrong. A colonoscopy was done a few weeks later. 3 polyps (all non-cancerous) were found. My dad had colon cancer at 54 and for me at 27 to have something happen like that was shocking. Fortunately I had symptoms/signs.

I've had a routine colonoscopy done since then (3 years later) and will continue to have it done every 3-4 years or so. The drink tastes fine. I love the feeling of being on the toilet cleaning all my pipes out. And depending on if you want to be awake or not -- you can go to sleep and take the Michael Jackson propofol and wake up like a new-born baby or if you want to be awake, they'll give you multiple pain meds including legal fentanyl. You can even pop a xanax before as well. My colorectal doctor is a Doors fan so it's all pretty euphoric

Was expecting an end of the summer, "check your furnace" type of tip from Darkside and got this instead.

Goodluck to you and your wife!

It is good to hear good news for a change

Indeed, at age 63 I am a BIGFAN of both annual physicals (mine is every October) and routine colonoscopies.

The procedure is a walk in the park. You can get knocked out if you want. It's the preparation and fast that sucks. But avoiding a painful and horrible death seems worth it.

Post chemo CT today. Long story short things look clear. Even the enlarged lymph nodes have shrunk to normal. Still have an oncologist appointment, another colonoscopy, and port removal to go over the next couple weeks but my god man it felt good reading all those "negatives", "grossly unremarkable", and "no masses".
