Let me ask you this.... If the goal of Elon Musk's company is to live on Mars, why are they not starting with the moon first?

I was just having this discussion with some friends last week. I'm pretty sure the Royal Family is a net economic gain for Britain.

So the people that resent it are doing so out of simple jealousy.

Being a royal is a two-way street. Sure, there are a lot of perks. But it's a demanding job that includes many duties one may not feel like performing.

That's why Elizabeth II was so beloved. She performed the duties without complaint.

No one wants to hear Charles or Markle bitching as they sip Cristal in a castle while wearing $10,000 outfits.

I don't know what they're doing. I do know it takes like 6 months to get to Mars with our current technology. I also know terraforming isn't remotely realistic with our current technology. I wouldn't trust Elon to do anything in "space" beyond Starlink.

I would think the moon is less habitable than Mars. One day on the moon is about a month long, the temperature range is a lot bigger, it has no atmosphere. It would be hard to grow anything at all there and I don't think it has any water. Mars at least has ice.

I think you'd be subsurface. Even a few dozen meters deep protects from shit the sun does that we generally don't care about because of the earth's magnetic field but is generally quite devastating without an atmosphere and magnetic field and what not.
There is water on both the moon and Mars.

I am suggesting, since the moon is closer, why are they not setting up colonies on the moon to see how it would work out before sending them to Mars?

That conspiracy theory tool doesn't have the power to make Mars hospitable. My passing "knowledge" tells me that MANY thousands of nukes, some other seeds, luck, and then centuries of waiting before we learn if it's work.

The challenges of Mars are completely different from putting a base on the moon.

If shit goes south on the moon, we're things ready in case of emergency, we're three days away. That's 6 months under optimal conditions to Mars, most of the time more than 18 months away.

considering we've never landed a man on the moon, have no idea how to get a man (or woman or transgender) to the moon AND return (that's the challenging part), any moon-based scheme would have to quickly prove itself or it'd get exposed as a lesser version of the fraudulent grift the Mars ventures are.

Whereas with Mars: it's fucking Mars! It's a long way to go. Give us time and $$$$$$$$$$$ and we'll try to get to Mars; even if it doesn't work out (which it won't in anyone currently living's lifetime)--oh, well, at least we tried and some government contractors got 2nd and 3rd homes with swimming pools out of the deal.
