Uber really is a very well done system that is a big leap forward.

Just enjoy it now, because once they effectively destroy the cabs they can start to accomplish their goals.

Yes, surge pricing sucks now. It's going to suck even more.

also, in my experience Uber drivers are a lot better drivers than cabbies.......probably because they haven't been conditioned over years to drive like a raging asshole

Probably because many of them OWN THEIR VEHICLES.

So how many people here drive their own vehicles without insurance?

Same here. They email you a receipt almost immediately, and I just screen shot it over to the AP team.

And agreed on the surge pricing....remember a few weeks ago when it was freezing cold out, I thought about grabbing an Uber......then I saw that the prices were nearly 5x the normal rate. No Uber for me that day.

This guy gets it.

At which point the local governments will step in and make them all like taxis again.

They don't have insurance that covers you as a passenger.

All the insults in the world doesn't change that.

I think the requirements are a 4 door car, proof of insurance (passengers included) and a 2003? or 2007? later car....

A drivers license might also be in there....lol

I'm fairly confident that you can't work as a livery/taxi/whatever service and be covered with just your personal lines auto insurance. There do exist small exceptions or endorsements for things like, say, if you're shuttling around your local church group or something benign like that, but something like this? Almost certainly not.

You are covered by my insurance if we get in an accident in my car.

If I was acting as a taxi or livery agent, then it's a whole other ball of wax.

I believe the issue is that many auto insurance policies don't cover you when you are transporting paying passengers and Uber basically says "We don't care" about that issue.

They are driving without insurance for their passengers.

It was clear to all in this thread other than you.

you were the one asking who would drive their own vehicle without insurance, which has absolutely nothing to do whatsoever with the conversation

Correct.

To infer Seacrest meant anything else is a reach imo.

I think Uber cares.

They care enough to provide a low cost of entry to their drivers, while leaving liability issues to them to deal with.

I won't drive my own vehicle without insurance.

I won't drive in someone else's without insurance either.

https://support.uber.com/hc/en-us/artic ... -accident-

Quote:
In The US, What Insurance Is Available If There's An Accident?
If you’re taking a ride requested through UberBLACK, UberSUV, or uberTAXI, your livery or taxi transportation provider carries a commercial insurance policy in at least the minimum amount required by local regulations. If you didn’t get his or her insurance information at the time of the accident, please reach out to us so we can connect you.

If you’re taking a ride requested through uberX, some transportation providers are rideshare drivers providing transportation with their personal vehicles. Rideshare providers carry personal insurance policies. However, there’s a commercial insurance policy for ridesharing with $1 million of coverage per incident. This policy covers drivers’ liability from the time a driver accepts your trip request through the app until the completion of your trip. This policy is expressly primary to the driver’s personal auto policy. An additional insurance policy covers drivers when they are logged into the Uber app but have not yet accepted a trip request.

There is also uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage (UI/UIM) of $1 million per incident for bodily injury, in case another motorist causes an accident and doesn’t carry adequate insurance. So, for example, injuries caused by a hit-and-run accident would be covered by the UI/UIM.

For additional information, visit our blog: blog.uber.com/ridesharinginsurance

While you might be correct, I have a feeling someone who put in the $1 Bill and Morgan Stanley, who I think is getting ready to bring them public has looked into this much more than you or I have.

Uber upped their insurance in 2013.

I was wrong about current insurance.

One of my co workers tried to be a driver for extra cash for a while but it ended up not being worth it. They had all sorts of weird rules and minimums.

Be careful with standard UberX. They may not have room to fit your bags if it is an Elantra or Corolla or something.
