I told him "you are correcting a lawyer, English major and the guy who controls your playing time on the definition of a word. I didn't read this before.

Maybe some part of the story was lost on my developing mind but my grandma used to tell me stories about boys coming to the house with sticks and paying her mother a nickel to take a few whacks at the legs of her and her sisters. My great grandma was a hardened, old, battle axe so I don't remember being surprised by this news. Still, I could never really understand what the whole holiday was about. It seemed like some old world version of The Purge.

Thanks for sharing this. That was a deep buried memory that gave me a good laugh. I can see my grandparents old place across from Kilbourn Park when I take the Metra home and it always loosens up similar memories.

My grandparents weren't immigrants but grew up with the immigrant experience where old customs were commonplace. My grandpa was a gentleman who, though not highly educated, was smart. My grandmas family were vulgarians not far removed from their hillbilly roots whose family tree undoubtedly had has interconnected branches.
